Skincare - overwhelming

Anyone else feel EXTREMELY overwhelmed in regards to skincare? I REALLY want glowy skin that's even in colour but when I think of all the products you have to buy (that might not even work) to achieve flawless skin, it's so daunting & expensive 😩🤣.. I just want to find 1 or 2 products that gives me the skin of my dreams 😍🤣 annoying cuz our parents & grandparents didn't do all this shit & have great skin🤦🏾‍♀️

Hi lovely! What skin type do you have? I have found the only stuff I need is a vitamin c serum or moisturiser, hyaluronic acid serum and then a soothing moisturiser on top. Also spf all the time! Boots, The Ordinary and the Inkey List are all very reasonable! ❤️

Good skin is genetics! And better cameras in our generation makes it seem like our skin is worse in comparison. Skin care doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. But it can a lot of trial and error to figure out what works for you. Your most basic daily routine should consist of a cleanser, a moisturizer, and a sunscreen. For good basic beginner skin care actives, I would try vitamin C, or retinol derivatives if you're not pregnant or breastfeeding. You'll want to start slow if you are introducing new products so that if something gives you a bad reaction, it's easy for you to figure out what it is. Face masks and stuff like that are fun extras, but not necessary. I have the best skin of my life right now, And I probably do less to take care of it now than when I was in my twenties

@Rosie umm.. I would say it's dry, like I have to moisturise after washing or else it'll feel tight. Thank you, I'll check them out 💕

Honestly less is more. Get a good cleanser for your skin type. Use a toner right after. I use witchazel because it's cheap, effective and doesn't have a ton of nasty toxic ingredients. Use a good moisturizer, I like Josie maran face butter but anything with ceramides would work. Exfoliate 3X a week. I Also do a weekly clay mask you may want something more moisturizing but it's optional

@Raqi yeah, genetics really does play a massive role. I definitely need to stick to the basics cuz it is so overwhelming when I see what others are using.. I'm like 'how the hell do they find the time to do it all?!' 🤦🏾‍♀️🤣

@Amber that's the other thing that I find overwhelming; remembering to do the routine every day haha 😂

@Sudanny✨ I know it!! 🤣 it's a lot... if you're consistent, it will pay off. You gotta do it twice a day- I do it as soon as I wake up, right after I pee and brush my teeth then again at night right before bed.

Besides the basics like drinking water, wearing a moisturizer with sunscreen and washing your face…. Prescription tretinoin at bedtime and vitamin c supplements (topical or oral).

@Amber yeah, I need to get serious with this cuz my skin has been looking so dull & lifeless 🥹🤣

@Haley 💚 thank yooou, I'll look into that 😊

Here’s what I do: AM routine Mist my face with rose water / water spray is good ( just put water into a spray bottle) - don’t wash in the morning Use good molecules niacinamide brightening toner $14 Natarium - Vit C serum $21 Cerave moisturizer Beauty of Joseon sunscreen - $23.66 CAD PM routine Oil cleanser - I use Clinique’s take the day off $55 CAD Cerave cleanser - green bottle Kiehls microdose retinol serum - $88 CAD Cerave moisturizer Josie Maran argan oil to top off - $30 CAD All prices listed in US unless specifically mentioned CAD ( Canadian) prices.

Best things I've ever done for my skin were free - stop wearing face makeup and start drinking more water. That got me 90% there. Unfortunately what's gotten me the best clearest glowiest skin of my life is being pregnant, which is not free, easy, or particularly pleasant, so can't recommend lol. But the water and quitting face makeup most of the time I 100% recommend.

@Roshini thanks for sharing 😊.. So do you only cleanse once a day? Do you put your spf on top of your moisturiser?

@Vervain 😂 tbh, pregnancy was good for my skin also but it's not sustainable haha 😂.. Unfortunately I don't feel confident going out without at least foundation on 🥹😭

I have always admired black and Asian people's skin because it is so beautiful, to me they are the ones who naturally glow and they look younger the longest. I think the best way to do it, is by going with a dermatologist, they can give you the best recommendations, some of us need more things to use to get a soft and healthy skin.

@Perla that's true, they usually age really well. A dermatologist might be costly but I get where you're coming from 😊

@Perla Black and Asian people tend to have more oily skin, and the melanin offers a low level of sun protection (though sunscreen is still a must!) I'm biracial and people think my mom is my sister, fingers crossed I age like the melanated side of my family 😂

@Sudanny✨ Like mine then! A really good people to follow on Instagram for a lot of skincare advice are Caroline Hirons, Danessa Myricks and Lisa Potter Dixon! They give really quite good information and are all trained in beauty too. 💕

I went to my derm and got prescription Tretanoin 0.05% Started in January and my skin is already so much more clear, even, and glowy! It does take months to see results, but a tube that will last me 8mo-1year for only $70 is so worth it! Only other products I use are drug store facial cleansers, and an Estée Lauder under eye cream that my derm said isn’t even necessary. Oh and I use sunscreen and reapply every two hours that I am out of the house! That’s actually of the utmost importance.

@Rosie thanks! I'll check them out 😁💕

@Shar oh yeah? Might have to look into that product once I've finished breastfeeding as if I'm right, I think you can't use that whilst breastfeeding🤔

I was using curology a while back and seen a hugeee difference. It is on the pricer side and I haven’t bought it in a while since. That being said I had less breakouts, my skin was more even toned as well. I probably had the best skin ever when using it.

@Sudanny✨ I try to keep it as simple as possible due to me anxiety too, wash my face and I just use one serum with hialuronic acid and moisturizer, and I also follow a few dermatologists on Insta, but you can find a lot of them using #dermatologist.

Vitamin C,sunscreen,moisturizer,and cleanser helps. Cervae has a great line of products. I also take a multi vitamin daily. All these things you don’t have to buy often. Less is more😊.

If your skin is more in the drier side it might be that you are washing it too often. My sister has oiler skin and she has to wash her face every morning and night. My skin gets dried out if I do this. This is my quick and easy routine: Morning - Whipe face with wet washcloth and pat dry. Put Elf hydroboost toner on(which hazel is great I just can't stand the smell of it) use cerave hydrologic acid serum. Moisturize,spf and light foundation with maybaline dream tinted moisturizer(3 steps in one) Mascara and a nude lip stain. Night- every Mon. Wed. Fri. Exfoliate with St. Ives radiant skin. All the other days wash face with cerave gentle foaming face wash. Pat dry and do toner again. Olay vitamin C cream(I only use at night as it will cause me to burn easier during the day) That's it. Super fast and minimal products. I wrote this down and taped a pretty sticky note to my mirror till I had the routine down pat.

If any of you would like a free facial consultation I'm more than happy to help. Sometimes we use too many products and that's what cause problems.

Same girl! I notice juice cleanses help my skin get more of an even tone too

@Sarah thank yooou for sharing your routine. That's very helpful, I might have to do something similar cuz I easily forget🥰💕

@Paisley oh yeah? Any particular juice concoction you'd recommend?

You don’t need anything expensive and never have acne or breakouts. I use ginseng Vitamin E oil and use SPF 30-50 during the day. And use the same Vitamin E for night. But if you want great skin care for your money. CostcoNext sells the viral skincare 2 pack for the price of 1.

Hey hun, you should try one of those specifically made mosturisers for you face, like dematica or skin for me. Used Dermtica in the past and it was good. Am: -simple cleanser -hydrating mosturiser( if it has Vitamin C great other wise add the Vitamin C drops) -sun cream Pm (double cleanse) -oil cleanser or Micellar cleanser -foaming cleaner -toner -Dermatica. That’s as basic as it gets 🥹 I tell myself our parents were probably eating less chemicals and less hormone imbalances than us

All I do to my face is put cocoa butter on it and I drink a lot of water and my face looks amazing it’s what I put inside u as well

@Sudanny✨ I’ve noticed definitely celery, cucumber, chlorophyll, aloe, lemon

@Paisley thank you 😊

Your skin looks amazing!

@Sudanny✨ my pleasure :)

I don’t have many skin products honestly, I swear by Vitamin C serum, and a good hydrating night cream, for day I aways use a spf50 tinted moisturiser. Lots of water, exercise helps with that “glow”. That’s basically it for me

@Sudanny✨ that’s right, I only properly cleanse once a day. You don’t want to remove those healthy oils that accumulate overnight. Also for really good skin, this maybe a hard one, but, quit sugar! Or lower your sugar considerably at first if that’s hard.

@Shar how much does a derm appointment usually run to get Tret?

@Lianne thank you, it's makeup 🫣😂

Yes water and genetics help, but as a former esthetician, products to a looong way. There’s really not a lot products can fix other than deep scarring. Depending on where you live and your skin type will determine what products you need. For example I live in a very dry climate so I need extra hydrating products. A lot of the advice here is well intentioned, but it’s what people have found for their skin and you need to find what works for yours. Honestly I would find a really good esthetician and schedule a facial and see what she recommends. A typical routine looks like: AM: Cleanser Serum Moisturizer Sunscreen PM: Double cleanse (if wearing makeup, if not single cleanse is ok) Serum Moisturizer That’s the basics. If you want to create change in your skin you will need to add in actives ie vitamin c in the morning for brightening and vitamin a at night. Vitamin A needs to be added in slowly and is not suitable if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. At the moment instead of vitamin A

I use a mandelic serum since I’m breastfeeding and it works really well. These are just my opinions as someone who used to be a skincare professional, but if you want to create change in your skin it’s going to be through products.

Thank yooou @Caitlin for the breakdown 😊.. I'm planning on buying the basics & trying them for a while to see if just don't that gives my a lil boost 🥰
