Colostrum harvesting

Sorry to jump on the band wagon of colostrum posts butttt I’ve been managing to express some colostrum this week but I’m struggling to actually get it into the syringe without leaving huge air gaps in the syringe…how does everyone do it?! I only get small bits of colostrum at a time and have to try and get it quickly before it drips off 😂 is there a technique or something to help? I’m just wasting syringes at this point!

Put it on a sterile teaspoon or egg cup from the syringe and then suck up a larger quantity, then it’s a mix of flicking it to knock air bubbles to the top and putting the cap on to try force them to the top - although don’t do what I did and push so hard it explodes and cry over losing a ml that took you 20 minutes to harvest 🤣

I basically push a bit out and then in, trying not to actually push the colostrum out. By doing this, the colostrum falls to the bottom to free up space at the top! I have to keep doing it as I always get bubbles but that way you can get a full syringe! Hope that works for you 💖💖

If I’m honest, I have the momcozy s12 pros and have been using them on a light setting to help with collecting colostrum. I’ve had much more luck with pumps than massaging and squeezing. I just keep it soft so that it’s not too much suction and I’ve gotten 7 syringes full across 3 days as I feel like it’s easier as it’s collected into something rather than having to collect directly into a syringe from the nipple x

I’ve had this!! I put it in the fridge and it was easier to then push the syringe back up without it spilling out because it was stickier. I also put the lid back on and kept tapping it down and in between minutes when I was sucking it up I stood it in a cup upright so the lid was at the top to try and let it flow down. Xx

Tap the side of the syringe to knock the air bubbles out. I also gently push the colostrum back up the syringe to get rid of the bubbles. I have occasionally spilt it all all over myself but finally got the hang of it!

My husband said I look like an addict flicking the side of the syringe to knock the air bubbles out 🤣

If you pull down the syringe so the liquid is at the bottom of the syringe (so room at the top) and flick the syringe gently the air bubbles should rise and then push the liquid up so the syringe is filled from the top (I haven’t harvested colostrum yet but this works for liquid meds so presume it should work for colostrum!) X

Hi ladies, can I ask if this was recommended by your midwives or something you decided to do on your own? I was aware of it through channels like this but no one I’ve seen has mentioned it to me and I’m wondering if it’s something i definitely need to be doing?

@Anna my midwife told me about it but I already knew about it. It’s meant to be amazing for baby if they can’t latch straight away or keeping it for if they’re poorly/after vaccinations. Especially as their stomach is only very small they don’t need much and it’s called liquid gold because of how good it is. Has taken me so long to be able to get some though! I thought it would be really easy but I found it quite hard xxxx

@Anna you don’t have to do it if you’d rather not. My midwife recommended it just in case baby is premature or in case breast feeding is difficult to establish straight away as the colostrum is filled with all the goodness! 🙂 it’s totally your decision though! X

Thanks everyone! I tried a combination of these today and managed to be successful! Although I did push too hard on the syringe and colostrum went everywhere 😂😭
