High TSH- 5 weeks pregnant

Really hoping someone can help. I am 5 weeks pregnant and had a blood test this week which confirmed I have a high TSH of 5.72. The GP prescribed 100mg of Thyroxine which I have started taking. I have just discovered my T4 on the same test was 16.4. Which seems contradictory. Do you think it is unwise to be taking the Tyroxine given its marginally high? Any one else experience anything like this? I’m so concerned about risk to the baby’s cognitive development. I also have a history of recurrent miscarriage. I’m not getting anywhere with the hospital and it seems they’re too busy. I feel like time is of the essence. Thanks so much for any help and advice.

Hi, what was the outcome i am in the same situation Thanks x

Hi Esther I am now 28 weeks pregnant and on 75mg thyroxine. I’ve been pushing for regular blood tests but it’s painfully difficult to do so! So some of them I’ve had to pay for privately. But basically I would advise testing every 6 weeks to keep your level below 2. Hope everything works out ok for you too. It’s such a worry but I think as long as well managed everything should be ok. Feel free to message.

I’m in a similar boat, 5 weeks pregnant and my blood test from 8 weeks ago showed TSH of 5.1 - waiting for new blood results but I’m not medicated and also worrying about this. Hoping I can get on meds asap x

Your TSH needs to be between 1.5-2.5 when pregnant it trying to conceive. I had a high TSH and had a miscarriage, could be a coincidence but it’s not normal to have your TSH above 5, and it certainly should not be left untreated if you’re pregnant. My advice is to take it while you’re pregnant and work with your doctor to stop it after you give birth or push for regular testing or a lower dose in 6 weeks after doing a follow up blood test

I have underactive thyroid and currently 27w. I haven’t had any problems. I do have an endo consultant which imo is useless. She rings me every 6 weeks but I get my bloods done by the gp as and when I feel. If I feel my symptoms are trouble then gp agrees to do bloods. I have been on 75/100 alternate since the start of my pregnancy and haven’t had to have it changed so far! I was distraught when I found out I was pregnant and hearing so many horror stories of pregnancies ending badly or not continuing. If my TSH was to rise above 3 I would ask for my meds to be changed as I know my body responds well to my TSH being much lower. Hope this helps
