Poor care at early pregnancy unit

I was at the early pregnancy unit this morning. I came here as I’m 5 weeks pregnant and been bleeding since last night. When I arrived I was asked to provide a urine sample, which they didn’t label with my name. The nurse then told me that my test came back negative, and that her colleague compared it to yesterdays test which was borderline negative. I explained to her that I had not come to the hospital yesterday so that sample from yesterday was not mine. She was confused and decided to repeat the pregnancy test with the same urine I had already provided. She came back and told me this was borderline positive, even though before she told me my test was negative. I feel have been lied to. My sample was not labelled correctly and I was then told my first test was negative and the second was positive. The nurse asked me to provide another sample which I could not produce enough urine for and so decided to leave, as they had already lied and broken their trust. I think this so really unprofessional and quite dangerous. I could be having a miscarriage or even worse an ectopic pregnancy, and the staff have lied to me about my result and also given me results of another patient from yesterday. Ive just got home and burst into tears.

Also to add I did a pregnancy test at home before going to the epu which came up with a strong positive line, so I don’t see how it could have disappeared within hours.

So sorry to hear you had such an awful experience. Unfortunately if you are still bleeding/worried, you would have to go back so they can check and make sure everything is ok. All I would say is I have had some experiences in hospital where they have lost my bloods like 3 times and had to keep pricking me and in the same hospital the most caring and understanding staff. Try and think of it as a one off experience, unfortunately mistakes happen. But, especially if this is your local EPU, give them a chance to rectify your experience because you will need them on this long and confusing journey. Fingers crossed they do better next time. If you REALLY don’t want to go back, wait for the bleeding to stop and take another pregnancy test a few days after. That will tell you if you miscarried. If the pain gets worse, call 111 who can assess you but you will have to go back to A&E if it is an ectopic. Sending you love and baby dust! I pray you and little one are ok! 🌈❤️

@Michaela thank you so much ❤️. I did get a call back from a&e and they told me they would like to see me tomorrow. I’ll go back tomorrow. I’ve come to this epu before and the staff have always been very caring and nice, this is the first bad experience I’ve had with the epu but I felt so upset. She even told me my pregnancy test from this morning is not valid because 10 mins have passed since taking the test, even though I told her the line came up within 2 mins.

So sorry you’ve been treated this way, I myself had an awful experience with them in January with my MC. I called them the day I started bleeding, the lady on the phone told me ‘don’t worry it can be normal call back if it gets worse’. So I called them back the day after to be told again ‘just see how it goes’ at this point it was bright red blood I was in agony and ended up going to the walk in centre. Bare in mind the walk in centre is at the same hospital as the EPU so I sat there for 2 hours in agony in the waiting room whilst they rang upstairs to be sent home and told ‘have some paracetamol and a hot water bottle and call back next week’ so I did. Guess what they still wouldn’t see me, I ask the woman on the phone what al I supposed to do as I have a booking appointment soon and I may not need it she turned around and said ‘just call them and cancel it if you don’t’ absolutely no sympathy what so ever! I ended up booking a private scan with WTTW just for my own confirmation…

Which I shouldn’t have had to do, who confirmed the MC, they then had to refer me to the EPU (the same one) as my tests were still positive. Guess what, they still never saw me! Told me to go back to the walk in centre 😂 It’s a good job my MC was complete and that it was just my HCG level being high still which was causing the positive tests. I pray to god that I never have to deal with them again!

@Ella oh gosh that’s aweful! I’m so sorry to hear about your MC and the way you were treated. I hope you don’t ever have to deal with them either ❤️.
