What is a “good” baby?

My mum said we have a good baby because my LO (2 weeks old) doesn’t cry often (we do get difficult days - maybe every 2 or 3 days she will have a bad evening or a bad afternoon where she’s just crying / fussing and we can’t work her out), but if we average it out, she has more good days than bad. I just wondered what does a good baby look like? And what does a bad baby look like? Is a bad baby one that just cries 24/7 and you’re getting no rest at all? I’ve never had babies in the family, so i can’t compare. We combi feed every 3 hours, I do the 3am feed but generally I can get her to lay in her moses basket after her 3am feed but she will fuss sometimes for an hour or so. Today was one of her “off” days - she has spent every hour since midday (nearly 10 hours straight) being awake and crying / fussing / feeding to try and work out what she wants and it has been exhausting. But this isn’t every day - are some people having to deal with that everyday? If so, I really feel for you as it takes a lot of patience to deal with.

The term ‘good’ and ‘bad’ baby is very very old fashioned. People still ask me if my toddler is a ‘good girl’ which means does she sleep through the night. Putting all her behaviourally mannerisms down to a very small detail! Your baby will be crying because they have tummy ache, reflux, want to be on you, etc etc. very normal baby stuff. It’s normal for babies to cry, it’s normal for them to not cry often. All of it’s normal! Xxxx

I really don’t like it when people call babies ‘good’ or ‘bad’ - if anyone asks me this I reply by saying she’s eating and sleeping as much as would be expected from a newborn! Calling them good or bad seems to suggest that they are in control of their ‘behaviour’ at this point, whereas actually they are just surviving the only way they know how! Babies aren’t meant to sleep through the night, they need to feed regularly, they are adjusting to life outside the womb and going through the fourth trimester. They are all just babies 😂

Have you tried playing white noise to her works a charm on my baby boy

Bad babies rob banks😎 Well that’s my reply if they ask ‘is baby good?’ ‘Well they haven’t robbed any banks recently🤷🏻‍♀️’

@Gemma 😂😂😂😂
