Yeah I’ve tested positive in all 3 of my pregnancies. All it’s meant is having to go into hospital earlier (2 contractions in 10 mins) for antibiotics in labour then they monitor baby for 24 hours
Can you ask to be tested for this?
@Rebecca i don't think they routinely offer the test, i was only tested as i went in for reduced movements and cramps, and i had some discharge, so they swabbed me to see what the discharge was. I've just spoken to my GP about it, she said it's really nothing to worry about just means i'll be on antibiotics closer to birth, and it's likely something i've carried my whole life as it's a bacteria that lives on the skin x
@Rebecca you can buy tests to do yourself. They’re actually much better tests than the NHS use anyway. I think they’re about £35
@Rebecca it is a routine test screened for in your urine at the beginning of pregnancy, but it’s transient so you could have it one week and not another, some hospitals routinely swab at 36/40 or in labour and others don’t
I tested positive for it about 2 years ago when I was being tested for infertility and I’m now pregnant with my first baby, feel free to message me about it at any point. I personally feel like it is something they need to test all pregnant women for but they don’t test at all unless you know you have it
@Herbi it’s not a routine test, I’ve knowingly carried it for 2 years now and when I found out I was pregnant every midwife has questioned me on why I know I’ve got it because it’s not something they commonly test for. Not unless you have signs of it
You’ll be put on antibiotics during labour! I did with my first and now this time round too x
I didn’t know I had it till I was in Labour they just give you meds through your Cannula it doesn’t affect anything what so ever.
@Cerys what I said is it is routine to screen urine for it at booking, however it’s not always present in urine and many people will know they have it or have previously had it as many hospitals ran a trial a year or so ago where every woman was screened, it is also routine for women in my area to be screened if previously positive in pregnancy.
@Herbi if that’s the case why has every midwife said to me it’s not routine. They don’t test for it unless you know you have it
@Herbi it’s also tested with a swab not a urine sample
@Herbi I had my shown through vaginal swab not urine? I didn’t think they could detect through urine ?
It can show in both :)

@Herbi your only tested if you know your a carrier. It’s not for every woman. It’s not found in urine. The only way to test is a swab, I’ve been a carrier for 2 years and it’s mentioned at every single appointment I have. I’ve researched enough about it to know
@Cerys feel free to go away and have a read about it if you are unsure
@Herbi I’ve researched it enough🤣 I have it
@Cerys I think you are confused as you can find it in urine it’s common in urine and can also be tested through a swab
@Cerys as someone who was part of running a trial on it I do happen to know what I’m talking about :)
@Jessica yeah it will likely be down to area as they don’t routinely swab in mine either since the trial ended unless you’ve had it before
I haven’t been screened this time round but they’re giving me antibiotics in labour just in case x
@Herbi urine sample isn't an accurate test, as it depends where the step b is, i didn't test positive through urine, probably because it's not in my bladder or urinary tract, but it is present in the vagina which is where i was swabbed. It can be picked up in urine only if it is present in that area
@Jess yes I know i didn’t say anything about the accuracy I was just commenting on the fact that everyone will have urine screening at the start of pregnancy so it can often show in that, lots of people could have it and have no symtpms etc
No test for it is particularly accurate as it’s so transient
@Herbi in my trust it deffo isn't tested for, i asked today
Group b strep? I found out this week that I have it. Please message me directly if you want to discuss in more detail x
