Regular blood tests 🩸

Hey girls Has anyone had to have regular blood test I got a call today and been advised I need to have a blood test every month till I’m 28 weeks then every 2 weeks till I labour 😮 they said they found some higher anti d (I don’t even remember what she said) but I did advise her I had my 2nd baby in January and I needed anti d as I’m negative baby was positive etc. she said that’s probably why and they just want to monitor. But I’ve got the worst health anxiety and I’m thinking the worst now 😩. Any similar story’s or advice would be grand. Thank you

Hey, I work in blood transfusion, so ask away if you have any further questions! The antibody (anti-D) in your case can become stronger as the pregnancy develops, so the frequent blood tests are to quantify the level of anti-D in your pregnancy. They will likely test the baby's father's blood too to check their blood group and potential foetal blood to establish if the baby is Rh D negative or positive. They'll take a sample from baby once they're born to confirm their group and perform a full blood count to check all the babies red cell levels are fine. If you were given anti-D prophylaxis in your last pregnancy, it's extremely unlikely that the anti-D detected is an immune response and just some left over anti-D prophylaxis kicking around. It's normally quite obvious from the level of anti-D detected but the guidelines we follow means if anyone has anti-D detected at their booking sample, we have to be extra careful and treat it as if it's immune anti-D which is all the extra blood tests.

Sorry if the above is confusing. Feel free to pm me!

@Joanna thank you for taking time to reply I’m so grestful. Dad is positive I’m negative. This is 3rd baby. I’ve never had to have these blood tests so often. So I’m thinking it’s because I had a baby literally in January and I was given the anti d then as baby was positive so midwife thinks it’s still in my body 😶‍🌫️ I’m really confused tbh I probably don’t even sound right what I’ve just typed I’ve got my head in a bowl of cold water I feel super yucky today lol xx

Yes it makes perfect sense that a small amount of anti-D from your injection is just hanging around. Things like that cause us so much work and hassle for the mums needing to be tested, but it's just to be on the safe side! Once you get your results in the post, feel free to drop me a message of the actual value, and I can give you some more info but likely all is completely fine and they're just taking extra care of you 😊. Hope you feel better soon!

@Joanna thank you so much. I’ll wave at you now and message you. Thank you again I’m so grateful x
