Smear test positive

I have just got a HPV positive result on my smear test, low grade dyskaryosis and been referred for a colposcopy, this might stupid but does that mean I have an sti or is it different? What exactly does this mean?

It means you have some abnormal cells which you need to be monitored for they usually disappear themselves but better to keep eye on. I had these 12 years ago and went through colostomy but it disappeared and my colposcopies were normal and since then I haven't had any positive results. Hope that helps

It’s not an sti though is it?

No it is not

I’ve looked it up but I still don’t understand technically it is an sti if it’s genital warts

It can be transmitted through sex but from what I understand that doesn't necessarily mean it was. I recently asked during my smear test if my test was positive for HPV would that mean someone has cheated and she said no and that it can show up at any point. It probably depends on where your concern comes from, a huge portion of the public carry the virus as men aren't screened for it (I don't know if it's not possible or it's just an expensive test) and therefore can have sex while carrying the virus and have no idea. If you have questions speaking to a free sexual health service would be a great idea, a friend of mine had it and was very concerned until she sat down with someone who could explain clearly exactly what it is. Hope this helps in some way

It said it could lie there for 10 years unknown however it blows my mind I’m 27 and had 5 smears and it’s only just shown up now, just goes to show to get your smears, I’ve had 3 smears in 2 years too and the other 2 were negative and now I have changed cells!

Do you have to go for regular smears now or anything?

I know someone that tested positive at about 45 years old so I suppose it can happen at any point. I haven't tested positive so I'm not sure if you would need more frequent smears.

My friend had HPV, apparently there are 10 different kinds and only 2 of those kinds result in warts showing up! I had no clue that it could just show up! I would definitely ask your doctor for more info on that lovely, but I’m sure they’ll give you treatment suitable for it. If it is an STI, I wouldn’t worry too much, it’s just unfortunately one of those things that go around and HPV is one of the most common xxx

You should received a leaflet with your results which explains what it is and why you Nedd to be monitored. I was diagnosed when I was not in relationship and no sex related. I was put on 3 years colposcopy( first year every 3 months, second year every 6 months snd then one annual and if they are all clear then back to usual smear. It is quiet common and can clear itself however it can get serious if not diagnosed and left untreated.

I don’t know if I’m Cin1 2 or 3 so I don’t know what treatment they’ll need to do until I’m there

They have to do the colposcopy first and if it is normal they don't offer any treatment and book you for next one in 3 months time
