Recently diagnosed

Hi All After a bit of advice and reassurance. I am 21 weeks pregnant and found out 2 weeks ago that I have epilepsy. I had a seizure in January just before finding out I was pregnant. They have prescribed me levetiracetam (the lowest dose). As I have just been diagnosed I haven't had any of the additional care and feel quite anxious about taking the medication as I have never taken it before. What have your experiences been with the care (uk) and is there anything I should be doing or asking for? Thank you for your help ☺️

I took lamotrigine 200mg twice a day which is perfectly safe. You'll need to see a consultant in obstetrics after your scans

It depends on the type of epilepsy you have, how controlled it is etc. with my first pregnancy I ended up on 3000mg a day as I kept having auras and feeling like I was about to have a seizure. My second pregnancy I was able to reduce down, although I’m still on 1500mg. It’s a safer drug for pregnant epileptics but it increases your risk of anemia, so I would recommend asking for a blood test to check your levels before you get into the third trimester so that there is time to bring them up if needed. But my epilepsy midwife recommended taking two sachets of spatone each morning with orange juice and I ended my pregnancy with higher iron than I started. I was recommended induction and epidural for my first but I declined as I wanted to have a go at calm birthing and a vaginal birth with as little intervention as possible. In the end I had a sweep at 41 weeks and then no further interventions. Second time around I had a planned home birth and it was gorgeous ☺️

Thank you so much for your comments! I think I just feel a bit lost as I haven't seen an epilepsy midwife or had any communication regarding the diagnosis. I have a scan tomorrow so going to ask someone then as I haven't been able to get in contact with my community midwife!

Thank you all! You're putting my mind at ease - think it's just all new and a lot to process on top of growing a human 😂x
