i wouldn't find it odd - i kinda feel Bill sounds like the name of a man more than a little boy, but you could use Billy as a nickname when he's little. i fully agree that William is very overused, but if you wanted more unusual option, you could use Wilbur or Wilfred as a full name, and Bill/Billy as a nickname. đź’™
I wouldn’t find it odd but I’m in a bit of a similar situation I’m using Thomas (my grandads brother) who was always known as Tommy but using Tommy as opposed to Tom which he can use when he’s older if he wants to

My 2 year old has a friend called Bill. It is his full first name, named after a family member. Personally, I had a grandad Bill but wouldn't be brave enough! But children do become their names. It depends on how you feel! Little Bill will be 3 this year and the name just fits him now!
