B Strep

Has anyone tested positive for B strep recently? Feeling a bit anxious about it all as I’m high risk for pre- term labour.

I had it in my last pregnancy so they treat you as if you have it in any subsequent pregnancy. They will run iv antibiotics when your waters break. If you are expecting a very quick labour and there isn’t time then they keep baby in for monitoring instead x

I tested positive at 34 weeks so will be having antibiotics in labour. I got really worried about it initially but I’ve since been able to reframe my thinking and see how low the risks are. They only need to get in one dose of antibiotics within an hour or 2 before birth to lower the risk of baby getting unwell massively and even if not, the risks are still only something like 1 in 400 and they’ll keep a close eye on baby.

@Mairi what prompted you to be tested at 34 weeks? Is it worth getting tested privately do you think?

@Naz I had a swab taken for other reasons and it grew strep b, I hadn’t planned to get swabbed otherwise. I guess it would just depend if you’re worried about it or not.

Is this alone resulting in why you’re high risk for pre-term labour? I tested positive for this at my very first, 6 week appointment and I’m just going to have the antibiotics during delivery as advised by the midwives 😊

@Due July Xo No, I have a short cervix

I had this in my last pregnancy and current pregnancy, first labour was so fast there wasn’t time for antibiotics, hoping for antibiotics this time, but who knows x
