Tummy time and head holding

Hi! My LO is 12 weeks. He is shooting through language skills (he started blowing raspberries and does not stop babbling at us/toys!), however we are still very much in trenches in terms of tummy time. When sat on the knee, he controls his head well enough (I think), but he simply does not engage in tummy time. He will lay down like a potato with no interest in lifting/moving his head. Occasionally will scream his head off or fall asleep. No amount of sound or toys enticing works, he just shuts off. Does it mean potential issues? Delay?

Every baby is different and ‘milestones’ are purely guidelines as to when you could expect babies to do certain developmental things. I would not worry too much about it right now as these skills can develop earlier or later and either is absolutely okay! I am an Early years teacher who hates development charts etc as it makes parents feel bad if their kids don’t hit them at expecting timeframes!

Have you tried helping him into the tummy time position? Put his arms folded up under his shoulders and see if that helps.

My little girl is 10 weeks and is exactly the same is we lay her on the floor, doesn’t matter the position, supports or toys we give her. However, if we walk around holding her or help her to sit up she holds her head very well and looks around, my health visitor said this all counts. I had a baby massage class yesterday where we did their backs and I had her laid across my legs with a mirror next to me and she actually held her head up looking in the mirror for a full 5 minutes so that’s something you could try?
