Son hates getting his hair cut!

My son hates getting his hair cut. I’ve tried different salons, distractions, treats etc He gets so upset he ends up making himself sick. We had an appointment today for his dad to take him and he got himself so worked he couldn’t take him. Any advice please? I don’t want to make things worse. Should I just be making him go? Still do it when he’s crying and saying no?.. or let his hair grow long? 😂 He has such thick hair.. I think he hates the feeling of the hair going everywhere, he hates wearing an apron.. Anybody having a similar problem?

Both my boys have long hair cos they hate hair cuts and look cuter. I just put it in a bobble and trim an inch every now and again to help with dead ends. Little girls don't get sent for stressful hair cuts all the time so I don't see why people are obsessed with trying to cut their little boys hair!

Is it a scissor cut or clippers? My son hates the clipper noise so just gets a scissor trim and I do a few cuts at home every now and then. If he was really upset about it I would just let it grow though x

@Rachel scissor cut. We tried clippers once and that was awful.. so went back to scissors. They thought clippers might get it done quicker.. but was not worth it.. 😂 Yeah.. may just leave it!

@Mel s no, it’s only because his hair is so thick!! Like it’s crazy! So we just thought it would be cooler for him.. and his fringe goes in his face.. but yeah.. might just have to clip it back..

@Jessica my son sits on my knee when we go so the apron goes around us both and I just sit and read books to him or take the tablet. I know you said you have tried distractions before but that seems to work for us x

@Jessica I tie jakobs up when it's warm out and use clips. All of us have thick wavy/curly hair in our family. if a little girl had thick hair not many parents would think to buzz it all off 😂🤷

@Mel s so lush! What spray conditioner do you use?

@Mel s no! That is very true! 😂😂

@Jessica I just put conditioner and water in a spray bottle and shake it up!

My best friend is a hairdresser and usually comes to our house to cut my sons, she uses scissors. He has always had it done with her so I think he is relaxed with it now. There was a time when I took him to the barbers and it was HELL, maybe try a home hairdresser that can come to you? He might be happier in his own environment with his toys etc around?

@Chelsea thank you!! I have been thinking this!! Definitely worth a go!

I used to be a barber and had many children like this. When it comes to cutting hair I literally pull out all the stops. It’s only a few times a year if you get a good bit cut off so use every bribe you can. A new toy, chocolate, iPad the lot. I give my little boy a paw patrol chocolate lolly every time and he knows it’s time for haircut, association. Some children are actually highly sensitive to touch so he may really be uncomfortable especially with the little hairs on the skin it can be so itchy. Cover his neck, ears, face and shoulders in talc powder first before the cut to help with the itching. You could grow it but only if he will allow you to wash and brush it comfortably otherwise you’ll be battling that multiple times a week. A friend of mine has a little boy who absolutely won’t go to the barbers so instead her partner feeds him ice cream whilst she has him wrapped in a blanket like a caterpillar and she literally sheers him. It’s the only way they can cut his hair 😭🙈
