Formula

We have been feeding our LO formula for last 2 1/2 weeks and I have now just realised that I have been prepping it wrong. We have been using cold boiled water and then heating it up in Mam bottle warmer. Is the LO gonna be okay? Can we pre-make the bottles using hotshot method and then store them in fridge to use within 24 hours? What would you advise? I am lost.

I use the kettle to fill the bottles. The formula has to be swirled in hot boiled water to kill off the bacteria in the formula (i swirl the bottles not shake as it makes less air bubbles) leave them on the side to cool for a bit then pop in fridge. When I need one I heat them in the microwave, 10 secs then swirl to stop the hot spots then another 5-10 seconds x

I got the tommee tippee perfect prep machine, you turn the dial to how many scoops of formula and it dispenses the water at the perfect temperature for baby, it has a filter inside so you can fill it with regular water and it does the rest, I’d highly recommend getting this as it makes life a whole lot easier, especially with night feeds - hope this helps

Tommee Tippee prep machine will change your life! Sooo much easier!

Personally the Tommee Tippee Prep machine made my 1st son ill as the temperature of the hot shot wasn’t actually hot enough to kill the bacteria in the formula. However, I know this is not always the case. This is my second time formula feeding and we’ve brought the Nuby Rapid Cool and a UV steriliser and they are amazing! We boil the kettle, make up the formula as normal in a MAM bottle, then pour into the Nuby and back into bottle; within literally like 30 seconds to a min, the formula is perfect temp. Whole process meets NHS guidelines xx

In answer to your question, if little one is ok now, then yes they’ll be fine. Just start making it correctly now. With regards to storage all different formulas are different, some can be stored in the fridge others can’t, so maybe look at the recommendations for what you are using. xx

No, the formula should be consumed immediately and up to 2hours after baby first started drinking. So it is not advised to pre make it and keep it in the fridge for all day. As said above, the prep machine is very good!

You don’t need a prep machine. We used to make a batch and kept them in the fridge for 24hrs. Boiled water in the kettle, let it cool for 20mins, mixed formula in the bottles and popped them in the fridge. Reheated them in a bottle warmer when we needed them. Did this for over a year with no issues!

Yes you can keep in the fridge for 24 hours. We used the kettle and a bottle of cooled boiled water from the fridge to do the hotshot method rather than a prep machine and made them fresh each time, but that was our preference.

I use cow and gate and the instructions say to leave the water in kettle for 30 mins before using otherwise it’s too hot. X

Don’t worry too much, you won’t be the first and won’t be the last to make this error 😊 as long as baby seems ok in themselves I wouldn’t panic x Water needs to be at least 70 degrees when making bottles (either full feed or hot shot) When my LB was still waking 2 hours in the night I made a batch of feeds on the evening and stored in the fridge (they’re good for 24 hours) and can then be heated. but now I use the hot shot method with a flask of boiling water for the hot shot and have pre measured little pots of cooled boiled water to add after the hot shot and formula. Makes a fresh feed in less than a minute and easy to take out and about 😊
