Should I try BLW?

So I’ve been struggling with getting my baby interested in food. He hates purées and just gags the entire time. But whenever I’ve recently tried giving him banana or cooked apples, he actually enjoys it/explores it more. He’s 8 months old and has 8 teeth. Idk if that plays a role in BLW. I have a lot of anxiety about doing it, but I don’t like feeling like I’m torturing him with purées and would rather do something he could enjoy. I guess my question is, How do you go about starting BLW if your baby won’t start with purées?

we started out with soft foods at 6 months, things like you’ve already given. banana, avocado, steamed apple, lightly buttered toast, steamed broccoli, baked sweet potato fingers etc. it sounds like your little one would love it😊

If you haven't already, look up the solid starts apps/follow them on IG because they're very helpful with what to serve and how. We started blw at 6 months because my baby girl got tired of being spoonfed after a week lol. She'll still have purees but only out of a pouch. So I bought a pouch maker and started making my own. She loves pancakes, waffles, avocado toast, sweet potato, strawberries... And she's 8 months and still doesn't have any teeth. I would definitely give it a shot if you think it'd be better for him. Also recommend looking up the difference between choking and gagging so that you don't panic so much while he's eating and mealtime doesn't become stressful for him. Good luck mama 🫶🏽 you got this ~

@Abby @Aamira thank you both so much! I appreciate the advice. @Aamira I’ll definitely download that app and follow them. I think my biggest anxiety is the gagging vs choking. I hear him/see him gag with purées but it’s a lot more nerve wracking with more solid soft foods 🥲 it’ll probably just taking some trial and error on my part to get used to it

We done a mix of purées and BLW, our LO took to BLW soo much better and much prefers the independence of feeding herself foods. I was proper scared to start with, watched plenty of YouTube videos about gagging/choking and what to do etc. In time it does get easier 🥰

My girl let me know how much she hated purées from day one! I just dove straight in with the finger foods and by 8 months, she was having the same meals as me. She’s such a good eater, I love watching her enjoy her food 😍

we started at 6 months with solids. babies actually chew with their gums! the Solids Starts app is a great resource to look up a food and see how to serve it safely for by baby’s age. their IG account has good meal ideas too.

We started by giving little bites of whatever off our plates.

As others have said, solid starts on IG is a great source. Also babies don't NEED teeth to chew although it helps. Start with soft solids like watermelon or avocado or anything steamed. As long as you can squish it relatively easily between your thumb and pointer finger they should be okay.
