Nursery settling in

I’ve just left my son for his first half day settling in session. He had four 1 hour sessions last week. The first two I was there with him and he loved it. The second two he had clearly been crying quite a bit. I’m just wondering when they finally give in and give you a call to pick up baby if they are too unsettled? Or do they just carry on trying to placate them? I’ve just come home and house feels empty and feeling a lot more emotional than I thought I would! Any guidance and support is appreciated!

My little boy is only 8 weeks so were along way from going to nursery but im already dreading it 🤣 but from previously working in nurseries we generally will do what we can to keep the child in the nursery by doing fun activities and trying to distract them just so they get used to it...you can call up to see how your little one is doing though if you need reassurance. It's quite normal for a child to cry at nursery for the first few sessions though as it's somewhere new but I promise you he will get used to it! The more he goes the more settled he will be 🙃 Maybe try giving him a comforter or something just so he can smell you/home on it!

Thanks @Lauren! I’m hoping it’s a positive sign that it’s been three hours and I haven’t yet been called.

Yeah I bet he's having a great time. It's totally normal for him to be unsettled being in a new environment with new people so try not to worry! Even though I've worked in nurseries and know how it works I'll still be a mess when my boy goes haha

I think if I were to offer you any advice I would say enjoy all the cuddles!! They told me to come and pick him up a bit earlier so he can have a proper nap with me. I don’t know why I’m overthinking this to mean that he isn’t having a good day like they are telling me! He was unsettled but they managed to settle him.

We don’t send children home but we do offer parents the option of shortening their hours until their little ones are a lot more sorted in the nursery. In the meantime we entertain them with songs, dancing, bubbles and going outside. A lot of nurseries, if not all of them work on a key worker basis and your little one will spend the majority of the time with his key worker to build up a bond and feel secure which can take a little while. It’s totally normal for babies to cry when going to nursery as it’s a new and strange place for them, especially without the comfort and security of their parents x
