How would you explain breastfeeding to a 3 year old?

Hi! My daughter just turned 3 and I'm currently 31 weeks pregnant with my second. I nursed my first until she was 18 months, and she has cousins who are currently breastfed, but I just don't think she gets it! She understands that babies only drink milk, but so far she only understands bottles like on TV or in her books. I don't want her to be totally weirded out when she sees it happening, but maybe I'm underestimating her knowledge? I doubt she remembers nursing, lol, but maybe already being exposed to it she won't be weird. How did you explain it to your little ones?

I think you’re overthinking it. Just tell her babies drink only milk and milk can come from mommy’s boobies or in a bottle. Tell her she did the same when she was a baby but now she’s a big kid and can drink milk in a cup. My almost 2.5 year old is still breastfeeding alongside her 6 month old brother but I plan to wean her at 3. So I’ve been casually talking about it the same way. When she’s a big kid etc etc. sometimes I give her some pumped milk in a cup so she knows it’s not just from me. I probably would still give her pumped milk after weaning but want her to stop nursing directly. I think they’re smart and intuitive. Don’t worry about it too much.

Def overthinking it. Just explain it flat out when it comes up. The baby will drink milk from my booby like you did. That’s what i say to my 3 almost 4 year old. He thinks it’s hilarious. But he gets it.

Thanks! I'm sure I'm over thinking it. I guess I'm asking because I've tried to explain and she just kinda gives me a confused look 😅

Momma feeds baby milk. This is the way baby gets it. Other animals do this too….

Maybe it would help to look at videos on YouTube or pictures of animals drinking from their mother And explains that babies drink from their mother
