Tested positive during induction

So I am at the hospital with my induction. When I got to the hospital they made me do a urine test and said if I denied the urine test they would put a hold on the baby and do a cord blood test. So I tested positive and they are trying to tell me I won't be allowed to breastfeed for 30 days. I now have to try and tell them that I will absolutely still breastfeed and it is my child and my body. The research isn't there on the "dangers" as well as they have actually shown that it is more harmful to not breastfeed than to have thc in my system. Feeling super frustrated. I'm in Utah BTW.

That's stupid. Girl is it legal there?

@ella it's legal if you have a medical card

Girl you are about to bring a beautiful baby into this world relax everything will be fine your in my prayers

@Holli I had 2 kids in az and was positive at delivery and I still smoked and breastfeed. Look at your laws about testing positive and having a baby. Ykw message me

Everything that they did sounds so sketchy ion like it! Please be firm with ur baby, ur body. Don’t let them put fear in u. Why are they even testing urine in the first place smh. Most hospitals are not allowed to do tests on u without telling u what kind of tests and u have the right to refuse! Omg I don’t like ur Hospital bt best of luck to u mama x and congratulations like others said check ur state laws!

@Amber if they fight me on it I am almost ready to say look I will have you take this shit out and I will go home lol

Ohhh positive as in THC? Nah Hun you brestfeed your baby, I smoked through pregnancy and through breastfeeding, my daughter is the healthiest 18 month old I know, except little sniffles she never been poorly I promise! I'm also older mum, I was 36 having her, dong let them tell you BS I'm in UK and it completely illegal here btw

@Radka thank you for the confidence ! I am going to be firm with them that I will be breastfeeding my baby here at the hospital and at home!

@Holli you're welcome and let us know how it goes, good luck with labour and Yaaaay to baby coming soon ❤️

You good 😊

That’s horrible! I actually admitted to my OB I smoked and even tho they encouraged me to quit especially if I wanted to breastfeed they never told me I couldn’t! I also did a urine test while in labour, they didn’t even comment on me being positive (which I’m sure I was). They know breastfeeding is still so beneficial and the pros outweigh the cons…hopefully you only have to be there for a night, and then can get your baby home and do what you want in peace.

I'm so sorry you're going through this

Be prepared for cps to do a couple checks. I've seen it happen to other moms in states where it isn't legal. They all said the worker just made sure the baby was taken care of and it wasn't a huge deal. I cant believe they told you you're not allowed to breastfeed! Tf?! If a nurse told you that id be asking to speak with the charge nurse and a patient advocate. Good luck babes!

Oh, if they really don't let you BF ask for a pump so your supply comes in and then do what you want at home.

I live where it's illegal and I had multiple urine tests and it never came up. I smoked and had edibles during my pregnancy and nothing ever came out of it

Hey babe I tested positive and the baby at birth they opened a DCF case but after a few home visits closed it. Girl just fucking lie to them please. Tell them you’re not breastfeeding even if you are. Tell them what they want to hear and do why you want with your baby.

@Holli I would go to another hospital closet to you if your in labor and still have time

they don’t have any authority over you, breastfeed your baby

I had a premature baby six months ago and the same thing happened to me. You are fine. I was in the same boat as you nervous frustrated but I know I have to be honest my baby was a micro preemie. They recommended30days as well, everything was fine I thought ACS was going to be called because THC was in his system too But the lactation consultant confirm that there’s no scientific harm so they can’t do that so you good 😌☺️

@Terrelleee congrats on being a new mama! Awee I love this story & This is exactly what she needs to hear! I honestly think she is dealing with bunch of Karens on shift at that hospital! Sounds like they are just giving her a hard time based on how their own judgement & bias feelings towards marijuana.

@Jasmin aww thank you so much! ☺️ and yes probably her not wanting to give urine. They probably thought she was taking a harder drug than THC. And us mothers that do consume THC. We automatically feel that it’s bad just because we growing an human being lol

I’ve never once heard of a hospital saying such a thing. I do know they get more concerned when it comes up positive & you hadn’t shared with your medical team that you were using thc, because if you weren’t honest about your health choices while pregnant who’s to say you wouldn’t lie about your child’s health care type thing. I hope it’s not too stressful for you 🫶🏼🫂 My son is 20 months now & I consumed thc my entire pregnancy & immediately pp, he was born healthy & has never had any health concerns & has hit every milestone & then some

I find this funny, my first baby I was told the similar thing but I was negative but I was given percocet every few hours after my c-section, it never made sense to me. I couldn't breastfeed if I was THC positive but I could be given percs???

Find sacred birth doula on Instagram and do some research. She offers state by state birthing rights legal package and it has saved so many mamas/ babies from having hospitals violate rights.

Breast milk doesn’t even carry THC from our consumption baby get minimal byproducts from how our body breaks it down

Have them test your milk these laws based on stupidity vs science

Tested positive for

@Persephone CPS actually doesn't do checks like that

@Abby I've had 2 friends have this happen to them and seen other moms talk about their experiences with it, so maybe they don't everywhere but some states are more pearl clutchy than others.

Wow ...that's ridiculous I would say you would do bottle and then just breast feed anyways

crazy how some even recommend smoking during the whole pregnancy to some women because of depression or nausea, but when comes to breastfeeding they tell you this

How will they know if you still do end up breastfeeding ?

Lie, don't try to fight them because in Utah they are strict. Just LIE you don't want a case on you

Ask for a patient advocate. It also wouldn't hurt to call a lawyer & see if you can get a free consultation/learn your rights.

@Jazmin Cannabis

It can be hard

@Jasmin it depends on the laws sadly

@Persephone Utah seems to be very strict on their laws. They will be very particular sometimes

I smoked though my contractions so this is very stupid to me, my hospital didn’t even test me

That’s ridiculous. I tested positive when I had my daughter and they were fine with me still breastfeeding. We did have CYF in our lives for her first month because it’s not legal recreationally here and my medical card was expired at the time, but the case ended up being dropped after they talked to us and visited our house. Needless to say, I will be stopping two months before this baby comes just so we don’t have to deal with that again However I still I cannot believe they think they have the right to tell you’re not ALLOWED to breastfeed your child. 😡😡

I smoked the night before I went into my csection because I was just so scared. They tested my blood and since I admitted to it they also tested his cord when he came out. Both negative. I was shook that it was negative. But my nurses never gave me a hard time about it after that. But isn’t that sad? I ADMITTED to smoking and since it came back negative they let it go. But it infuriates me more than ever that they think they can do that to you. The formula they would give is probably worse than what they’d find (if anything) in your breast milk. I am so sorry you’re going through that. I’d strait up refuse.

How are you guys doing now?

@Kedra we are doing good! We haven't heard from dcfs yet but the social worker said they will probably open a case and then close it because it is very common and they are really looking for more serious drugs. But I haven't heard anything yet. Other than that we brought him home after a 4 day stay in the nicu and he is happy and healthy now.

Excited for you

@Holli it’s good to hear that you all are home. Enjoy your new baby! Congrats 🎊
