TTC

Hi I’m 39, I have a 4 year old baby girl. We’ve been trying for two years with no success. I had my first fertility appointment yesterday and I’m terrified about being in uncharted waters. I went from not wanting children to now feeling like time is no longer on my side and wanting just one more. She talked about artificial insemination and IVF and IVF scares the bejeezus out of me because of the possibility of multiples. I dream of having twins to have my three and be done but IVF? Complications, pain and duress of more than two? I wouldn’t have the heart or courage to do a reduction. I’m not sure what I am looking for. Any support or words of advice is welcome.

If you only transfer 1 embryo at a time, your chances of multiples isn't very high. Especially more than 2. To be clear, IVF scares me, too. But the chance of multiples isn't why.

@Taylor why does IVF scare you?

The meds, the money, the stress of waiting to hear how many eggs you get, how many fertilize, etc. Plus I think failed transfers will automatically feel like a loss/miscarriage to me. In 2 years of TTC I've never once got a positive test. Plus I know that we would probably never do a second round. It would be a one-shot thing for us, which is just scary. I also am personally not OK with ending up with extra embryos. I don't want to make more than I would use. So there's some added stress there of trying to end up with enough but not too many.

Hey I can totally relate to this as I’ve been through two failed iVf cycles! My clinic only allowed me to transfer one embryo with that being said the chances were very low at the start. Especially with me I only had two good quality embryo’s! The more the better as you have an option keeping them in storage for later use.

At 39 ivf success rate is below 15% so don’t worry about twins - they would possibly only transfer one anyway! I’ve done 3 egg collections and 7 embryo transfers myself to get our baby boy at 40-41 and can honestly say it’s totally worth it!!
