Failed glucose

Anyone else fail the glucose test? Im trying to do some research on lack of weight gain and failed glucose test. I am not overweight and I was down almost 20 lbs pre-pregnancy weight. I have gained about 10 back but I am still down 10 and not gaining. My mid wife is concerned with that. But I can not find anything about people who are not overweight and lack of weight gain. Anyone? Edit: I'm sorry if this in any way seems insensitive. I have a hard time articulating and I in no way mean anything offensive!

I failed mines as well. I have to take the 3 hour glucose test tomorrow. I have been seeing a lot of ladies failing them this year it’s crazy.

I failed so bad a second exam was not even needed 🤡

My number was really similar to yours. 147. Know that gd is not necessarily weight related. I had it going into my first and I was a great weight/BMI. Lots of different things: genetics, husband's genetics, low vitamin d, etc etc etc. With mine they've made me confirm with a 3hr blood test. I would expect that with a number like yours. Things like bring dehydrated or stressed can throw off the 1hr. The 1hr is generally a screening and the 3 hr is diagnostic. Happy to share my experience if it would be helpful. There's also a really nice, supportive gd group on peanut if you want to ask questions there.

@Miriam I'm convinced I'll pass the 3 hour. I hardly ever eat and I think that is why I couldn't bring the number down. But we will see! I'm just unsure of how to research it to get results about gaining weight. I'm assuming more protein.

Diet affects your glucose levels but for instance I don’t have diabetes outside of pregnancy but now I have gestational diabetes. It’s caused by changes in pregnancy, not necessarily something you’re doing inherently wrong.

Meee 🙋‍♀️ I still haven’t technically gained any weight and I failed with a result of 199. I go in for my 3 hour test tomorrow. I also had GD last pregnancy. It’s *mostly* caused by the placenta which technically belongs to the baby, so don’t feel bad.

Weight gain has nothing to do with it. Yes if you’re overweight you’re higher risk but perfectly healthy women get gestational diabetes. I would say since your number is almost 10’points above it’s a def fail but you can try the 3 hour test. If it was only 1-2 points off I’d say it’s probably wrong but that’s significant enough to be a legitimate fail: from what I’ve heard it’s not the end of the world just a few diet changes and mindful eating

Thank you all for the education! I'm not feeling bad about failing or worried. Just wanting to be more educated! Also to get a better idea of what I need nutritionally. And I guess I figured that would be different in needing to gain weight. Please continue to share!!

I'm not 100% sure, but I do know that you can have gestational diabetes and not be considered overweight. I thought you had to be overweight to get it but I was wrong. Good luck though!

@Jen i know you don't have to be considered overweight to have it. Just can't find nutritional guidance for gaining weight while having it only losing or maintaining.

I failed the 1 hour as well by a little higher than you and then passed the 3 hour one perfectly 🤷‍♀️

Gestation diabetes is all about the placenta. It’s nothing you did. This looks like maybe the 1hr. They’ll have you take the 3 hr. Just because you failed this one does not mean you’ll fail the next one. Hang in there mama!

Gestational diabetes has nothing to do with YOUR health levels‼️‼️‼️What you do and eat can affect it but it’s caused by your placenta so however, you ate before or your weight before and all that kind of stuff doesn’t affect it.

I didn’t pass the one hour, so I did some research and started eating like I had GD before the 3 hour test. (I wasn’t perfect, but started getting into the habit just in case). I ended up passing the 3 hour, but the nutritional tips for GD are generally good eating guidelines. You could get an app that you can track your macros / calories. You can personalize most apps to your goals, so you can set for weight gain + whatever macro goals. Outside of pregnancy I tried to do protein % = to my weight, then an even balance between carbs and fat. GD is more like 35% carbs & fat, 20% protein (ish). You don’t need to be perfect with macros, but this can help you when making meal/snack decisions for your goals. For actually eating, you could try to eat something every 2-3 hours, with every meal/snack having a protein, fat, and carb based on your goal percentages. I use lifesum & it makes things really easy! I failed my 1 hour test (my number was 166, ugh), but I passed the 3 hour test. I was stressed too, but figured it didn’t really make sense to stress until AFTER the 3 hour test. 🍀

@Laura my midwife did tell me to eat every 2 hours. this was before I failed the test even. Because of my lack of weight gain following a near 20 lb loss. I struggle with eating because I had my gallbladder removed and I work in a fast paced environment 12 hrs most days with no breaks 💔. I've been carrying nuts and trying to eat high protein. And getting drinks with added protein. Thank you for the advice I am looking into the website!

@Brianne I will say that I lost 15 lbs in the first tri due to not eating due to nausea and in 25 weeks now and am starting to gain finally but my doc actually was like great then that puts you less at risk of over gaining which could increase my risk for diabetes and high bp so it’s kind of a blessing in disguise
