Contraception

Hi just need some advice on contraception. I’m getting my copper coil taken out next week as it’s causing pain and making me feel v hormonal. I’m just wondering if anyone has been on the contraceptive patch and is it any good. Ideally looking for something which doesn’t make me moody or put weight on. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated thanks 🥰

I unfortunately think no matter what contraception you chose unless it's condoms or something with absolutely no hormones you'll gain weight. Any time I've done any type of birth control I've gained weight and I think them telling us certain ones won't have that happen is just a gimmick to have us choose one. That's just me though.

Hello! I’m a physician who specializes in contraception. There are 3 kinds of contraceptives: non-hormonal, combined hormonal and progestin-only. The copper IUD is not hormonal but tends to cause pelvic pain and heavier periods. I’m sorry to say that your feelings of being very hormonal have nothing to do with the copper IUD and are just your hormones. I’m saying this to help you manage your expectations, if you keep feeling the same way, it’s not that the new birth control is making you feel hormonal, it is your baseline. Good news is that combined hormonal methods like the patch can actually make you feel “less hormonal”, they are the preferred treatment for PMS and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Regarding weight gain, the combined hormonal contraceptives do not cause weight gain, the progestin-only ones do, except for the hormonal IUD. In summary, the birth control methods that can cause weight gain are the Depo shot, the Nexplanon implant, and the progestin-only pills.

Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you!
