How long to pump for?

I need to start pumping more due to my little one not gaining weight adequately. I hear people say 'I know I have a let down at 26 mins' etc. How do people know this and how can I make sure I am pumping the most effectively for my body?

I usually shoot for 25-30 minutes. I get 2-4 let downs between the 15-30 mark and usually 1 let down between the 0-15 mark. I switch between 70 cycle (non let down phase) then switch it to 46/7 on the let down phase for my spectra pump

Did you get the right flange size as a start? I’ve been an exclusive pumper for the last 11 months. I typically will get anywhere between 4-5 letdowns per 30 minute session. Some women feel a physical sensation (it feels like a bunch of painless little needle pricks for me) others don’t feel much at all. Not sure how old your baby is, but I would stick to a consistent schedule. Like if they are a few months old, then I would pump every 2-3 hours. First priority would be to feed your baby, but I’d suggest pump another 15 minutes after they finished feeding to make sure to completely empty the breast. You can also throw in some power pumping sessions for a few days which should also help. The more often you feed/pump the more you’ll produce. Being consistent with a schedule, drinking plenty of fluids and eating lots of protein helped me to build my supply.

@Mikayla Thanks, I've been doing 25-30 mins. How do you know when your let downs are and when to change the setting to the let down phase?

@Claudia Thank you - she's 11 weeks at the moment. I'm thinking of changing to exclusive pumping as then we can monitor what she's having as there are concerns with her weight. I can feel my let downs when not feeding but can't seem to feel them when pumping. Hope I've got the right flange size, I've measured and don't have pain when pumping so hoping it's right!

I can just feel it. My nipples get tingly and that’s when the milk starts to come out so at that point I change and when the milk stops I change it back
