How often are you sanitizing pump parts? Overnight can you put them in the fridge?

Trying to save time. Explain how this works. Please and thank you. I am one month post partum and spend so much time at the sink. Any tips let me know, if if it’s always a need. Also, we don’t need to sanitize after 3 months I heard? Rumor? Let me know. Thanks!

I keep parts in the fridge and wash and sanitise at the end of the day

I may have been wrong but I didn't sanitize mine I pumped and rinsed my pumps after each use then washed them with soap after my last pump of the day. I struggled greatly so it may have not been the best but I stopped at 9 months and my son is still super healthy.

I keep them in the fridge for a few days and sanitize about every week

I've been advised not to use the fridge method by my midwives and lactation consultant. I bought extra pump parts sets so I have enough to pump the whole day and then I wash all of them at the same time before bed.

@Xena Ok! Do you rinse it out first, and put it in a bag? How do you do it? Or leave the milk in it?

@Lizzie Do you rinse the parts out first? Or put it in a bag? Explain a little more please and thank you. Wanting to try it tonight

@Kelsey Do you rinse them out first? Or leave the milk on it?

@Cassie Can you explain why at all? Bacteria can grow? Looks like I am seeing mixed reviews but your answer is helpful to me. Thank you!

No I don’t, I put it in a ziplock bag after use.. at the back of the top shelf fridge where it seems to be the coldest… that way it’s unlikely for any bacteria to grow. Also when I pump, I wash my hands before handling pump (most times anyway), I make sure I pour out milk as soon as I finish and pop it in the fridge straight away.. if for whatever reason it gets left out for an hour or more then I just wash it and sanitise it then rather than waiting till the evening. Yes the other ladies are correct that the FDA has recommended not to use fridge method due to risk of bacteria growth. I work in the biopharma industry and FDA will always lean towards the super cautious side so of course there is a chance if bacteria growth but my guess is the chance is quite low if you ensure you putting parts in fridge asap..personally I think rinsing it with only water is a bad idea as it can rather introduce foreign bacteria.

@Lizzie Trying this tonight. So helpful with your explanation. Do you use a brand new ziplock bag each time too? I’ll put it in the back of the fridge. Seriously you’re the best help and will save me so much time due to your knowledge

Glad I could be of help! No I don’t use a new ziplock everytime .. but I change it if I get spills and when it’s been a week or so.the preference is a Tupperware big enough that you can put both in and that way you can wash tupperware every few days..I just don’t have the fridge space for that haha. Yes this way really saves some time in the day and also your sanity haha ☺️ all the best!

Sometimes I rinse them out and sometimes I don’t. I used to use a new plastic bag each day but I ended up just buying some gallon size reusable silicone bags that’s I can wash so im not using all my plastic bags up.
