UC childcare cost

Hey! Hoping someone can help me understand… I return to work on 15th ocotber and little one will be attending nursery 2 and half days a week. UC have said that when I pay the child care on the 1st of every month to upload the invoices etc through the child care option. However, I am confused as to when they reimburse me a certain percentage back would this money need to go on childcare also (but I have already paid for it all for that month) or is then become a top up to enable me to get through the month? Sorry first time mum and this is confusing. As going back to work 3 and half days a week my wage has dropped to about 30K, and child care costing around £500 (with funded hours according to the nursery’s calculator) Any advice is appreciated.

So for example if your child is in nursery in October, and you pay that at the end of October & upload the costs, they’ll pay that in your November payment. So you have to pay it upfront first and then they give it back the next month if that makes sense! My daughter’s nursery is £408 a month and I get about £354 from UC for her childcare! UC are always a month behind you x

I have been using the money they give me for the previous months childcare towards the following month’s childcare so you only have to pay a full month the first month

It is just part of your universal credit payment. I pay mine at the beginning of the month, report the costs and get 85% back in my next uc payment.

Perfect thank you everyone, just all so confusing to me x

As you are returning to work you may be eligible for help through the advisor discretionary fund (ADF). If you’re eligible you will be able to get help with the upfront costs right away and also be able to report the childcare costs as normal and be reimbursed in your next payment. Definitely contact UC and ask them if you can avail of the ADF :)
