i had a natural delivery in hospital without any IV’s only had an injection of vitamin k after giving birth other than that i did it without any needles at all
In the US you have to have an IV in case of an emergency situation. Mostly you only have saline and fluids to hydrate you but on the chance of needing an emergency c section it’s already there for anything they’ll need to prep you with
@Alicia did you request this?
i spoke to my midwife about it as i’m not a huge fan of needles and will avoid them if i can, we created an advanced care plan, to say what i wanted such as if i was to need a cannula it would only be allowed if the labour caused a risk on mine or baby’s life if there was no risk they wasn’t allowed to put a cannula in, they midwife’s during delivery was so understanding about my decision and offered so many options other than needles
Trust me. If you have a hospital birth and Labour for hours. You may well need an IV of fluids or medication. IV just stands for intravenous / meaning into your veins. It’s a direct line to your blood stream if and when required in an emergency situation. I wouldn’t decline this, if you’re unconcious I am oretty sure a decision can be made in your best interest and that of your unborn baby.
I had a hospital birth, I had an IV but when I wasn’t getting any medication it wasn’t hooked up to anything! Just an IV line in case of an emergency!
Most of my labour I didn’t have an IV, only got one when requested epidural. Probably wouldn’t have had one if my birth plan went accordingly haha
Mostly saline and electrolytes to keep u hydrated. It’s also convenient to already have the IV in ur arm in case u need any other kind of meds cuz they can just attach it to the IV instead of having to put a needle in u quickly
