Speech Delay

Is anyone else experiencing their children having a speech delay? My son is 3 and his language has improved so much, and he is making great strides, but I can't lie... I find myself constantly comparing my kid to other children that have more words, and it bothers me that I struggle to understand what he is saying sometimes and I end up getting frustrated with him, and then end up with mom guilt. Any advice? He's in HeadStart home visitor program and public pre-k with an iep, he goes half days and gets speech a few times a week.

I went through this with my oldest son he had a speech delay and also started pre-k at 3 and his speech started improving and now he is 7YEARS old he reads and writes and he’s in the 2nd grade I would get frustrated with myself because I thought it was something I was doing wrong that he was delayed in speech but with his IEP things has definitely gotten better I say you’re on the right track and doing a great job getting him the help he needs now and as time passes his speech will improve greatly !

We didn’t have a speech delay but he was 11 months old when he started crawling and 17 months when he started walking! I was definitely having a hard time not comparing!

my oldest is almost 4 and she is very behind. she knew a few words a couple of times but they would vanish. i’m waiting to hear from the center to see when she’ll have an appt but she’s so behind i always feel guilty and thinking it’s my fault :(

Also I would see if ABA therapy is available to possibly make home visits to your house that helps as well my son still receives his

Ariel, as much as we think it's us, it's not ❤️ they just need more time, and that's ok, I need to remember this more often

Nakia, I will definitely look into ABA, thank you

Ask the school about getting speech therapy. It would be free if he qualified. If not, just call a local clinic and see if you can get you child in for an evaluation. I always say, speech is one of those thing that isn’t a waste of time and money. If the therapist says “hey, kids speech is on track and we see no problem” that’s awesome. And if the evaluation says he needs some help with certain areas, that’s fine. Early intervention is key to future success. Your child is still young enough to catch up if indeed you require services. My 3 year old goes once a week for 30 minutes. He’s not considered speech delayed by the SLP, but they’re helping him with novel language as he has echolalia (unsolicited repetition of vocalizations made by another person: repetition of a word). Early intervention mama! Call your school and get an IEP meeting going and request a speech evaluation ( free). If you do private speech (at a clinic) this is where the cost might come in based on insurance

He was in early intervention but in my state they stop at age 2, so that ended last year, and he does do speech through school 2x a week for 15 mins, and I also have called a speech therapist and occupational therapist office but still waiting on them to call back and I keep calling and bugging them about it. My son also has echolalia but it's improved a lot. I'm just really hard on myself and always think there is more I could be doing. I read to him at night too before bed since that's the only time he'll actually be attentive to it. I just don't know what else to try or do? If anything..

And he already has an IEP we started last year, and have an upcoming meeting for

@Ariel Martinez did you check her hearing with audiologist? Mine couldn't hear, we had to put tubes in
