Speech delays

My son is nearly 20 months and still isn’t speaking. He can say mum and dad but it’s never in context and he does make babbling sounds all the time. Should I be contacting a speech therapist or wait? At first I thought wait but i’ve seen in another group people are getting help and don’t want him to be behind?! He is starting nursery in Feb next year. 🥰🥰

We had a referral to speech and language team for issues swallowing and there was a 2 month wait, so I would say it's worth considering getting an appointment, you can always cancel if he starts saying more words in the meantime! If there isn't as much of a wait in your area it won't do any harm to have an appointment and potentially get some reassurance 😊

Hey Hollie my son is 20 months and has no words. Like none at all. I would say going to HV would definitely be a good option as by 20 months they should apparently have a collection of words like between 10-20 and be learning new ones like every week or few weeks so definitely is a little bit behind. I got told my waitlist is like 6 months. Now I do know some kids can just be a little behind like my niece is almost 10 now and yaps non stop but when she was 2 I think she only had Like mum and dad etc but after like 2/3 months at nursery she started to pick up words really quickly I'm assuming from being around other children. Now I'm not saying that will or won't happen with your son. You can put him on list and I mean if before you get an appointment he seems to start getting words etc you can still go and they can see him and may just say he seems fine and send you on your way or they may say he still needs our help a little so I would say it's no harm in just getting it checked

My daughter is 20 months doesn’t talk either, she chats a lot of noise and babbles constantly but no words, only clear words we have are Daddy and Ready. I’m not concerned as she is excelling in every other way! She is starting nursery in January so I’m hoping this will help! Me and my partner have said if she isn’t talking by 2 then we will look at referrals but will give her the time first as some kids are just a littler slower than others xx

Mine son is 20 months. Doesn’t say mum or dad. Says “all gone” when he’s done with food, his brothers name and doggy. When I took my youngest for his 12 week check with the HV I mentioned it. She said she’d come out and see us. Had a text from the speech specialist today who’s coming next week to our house to see him. I think it’s worth asking someone about it if you’re concerned x

We’ve got no words at all 😞 asked a hv and she said give it until December / jan then if the same to contact her again x

Most start talking once at nursery. If theres any underlying issues it may not help but go to gp or hv to get ball rolling just in case but i bet once hes been at nursery a few months there'll be no stopping him

Mine doesn’t say many clear words either, she says Mama, Papa, bye and some other half words but understands everything and follows instructions. Her sister was the same and didn’t say proper words until after 2 then sentences were after 3. She was referred to talking groups etc. She’s almost 5 now and never stops chatting, her vocabulary is quite extensive and even uses some big words in context.
