Anyone else’s toddler have a speech delay and difficult behaviour?

So my little one is 2 years and 3 months. He really is a lovely little boy, so smiley and happy but he is behind with his speech. I noticed this about 2 months ago but then nursery confirmed it a couple of weeks ago. In the past couple of weeks his behaviour seems to be spiralling out of control, hitting, biting, spitting, screaming. I’m quite a calm person and always try to talk to him calmly but that isn’t getting me anywhere and I just don’t know what to do. Nursery are bringing someone in to try and support and I’m trying everything at home, reading more, nursery rhymes, pointing out objects etc. Is anyone else having or have had this issue? I’m terrified that I’m failing as a mother and screwing up my child. He is my first 💙

My son is speech delayed too. Don't have those exact issues, but lot's of tantrums and frustration atm

My daughter is 2 years 2 months and says very minimal words. I went to a speech therapist and they suggested getting her hearing tested, although I said I know she can hear me they said it could be glue ear so what she's hearing is muffled hence why she may not picking the words up. Maybe worth getting it checked, I was told an 18 week waiting list.

My 2 year old boy is also speech delayed, he’s been referred to a speech therapist and paediatrician

@Emily what was the waiting time on the speech therapy? I see you in Attleborough, I’m in Norwich

@Emily my son had his tonsils adnoids out, at our consultant appt she advised he had glue ear.. he had grommets fitted and the difference in his talking is incredible. If it is that I would recommend the grommets.. there were sounds he wasn’t making etc and it was because he couldn’t hear them properly.. we had no clue about the glue ear! All the doctors we’d seen who checked his ears never said anything but the ent consultant saw it straight away

@Jade I went to 2 different free events with private therapists I saw advertised on Facebook. Both said they wouldn't provide support without having the hearing checked to tick it off knowing its not the reason. They also both hinted that 2.5-3 is the age they normally start helping with. I haven't looked into NHS, guess that is offered after the hearing test. Both privates were offering £80 a session.

@Emily the health visitor referred my boy but haven’t been told how long the wait is, he was 2 in July

@Terri glad someone picked it up with your son. I will definitely ask them to triple check when it comes to her appointment then! Really lovely to hear the grommets worked, thanks for the positivity.

@Emily yes definitely get them to look! He had been to the doctors and hospital so many times for tonsillitis, being admitted and stuff and no one else mentioned it. But the difference it has all made is incredible. Different child.. Hope you get some answers soon

@Jade ah my daughters HV appointment is this Friday so I'll ask then

Thank you all for commenting! This is really interesting and helpful! I will get on the phone to the doctors tomorrow to discuss getting him an appointment! He is saying some words but really struggles with pronunciation …like he says ‘daddy’ but when I try to get him to say something like ‘teddy’ it comes out exactly the same and little things like that. Thank you for the advice and for making me feel like we’re not alone, will speak to the doctors 🥰
