Potty Training

I’ve been having trouble with potty training my 2 year old son. I haven’t been as consistent due to having an infant, but when I do, I try to take him to the bathroom every hour or so and it hasn’t been successful. Does anyone have any pointers or suggestions? It would help a lot!

Wait a few weeks and try again :) sounds like he isn’t ready ❤️

We’ve got a potty downstairs and potty upstairs so we use each one as to wherever we are in the house. I never took her to the potty unless she needed help to take knickers down or wipe. I just always prompted her and asked if she needed to go. Tbh she’s taken to it like a duck to water and always says when she needs to go etc. not dry at night yet but that will come. I would let him be a bit independent and ask every so often if he needs to go etc x

A lot of times taking them to the bathroom at set times doesn’t work because they don’t recognize the sensation that they need to go. When I was potty training my son we carried the portable potty with us to every room. As soon as they start going you grab them and put them on the potty and after a while they start to make the connection. The first half of day 1 was all accidents for my son and then he got it. The Dr. Becky guide was really helpful for us.

Best thing that worked for mine was using fruit snacks. He loved it. And when I tried doing it with pull-ups it didn’t work and when I tried naked it just made more messes and I also have an infant, the potty training underwear worked best for us

@GMF That sounds effective! However, how can you tell when they want to go pee? I usually know when my son needs to go no. 2 but not when he pees.

@Kimberley Will there be a cue as to when he would be ready? The only cue I have noticed is he pulls his pull ups down when it gets soggy or when he needs to be changed afterwards.

@Jan Amor you may not always know until they actually start going lol. I mean you just need to be prepared for all the accidents at the very beginning. But sometimes they’ll do a little dance or may hold themselves in the front when they need to go.

Best sign is when they can tell you they have weed or pooped in nappy, or just before hand, that’s a really good indication they are aware of their body ❤️

My daughter just turned three around the time she would tell me she peed and wants a new nappy or when she wants to pee, we went out to buy her pants and we have had a potty in bathroom and in playroom since she was two just waiting until ready, she has had a few accidents but as many as I can count on my hands she’s very aware unless distracted :) I feel like waiting really helped x

@Kimberley Thank you for the advice! I was worried he was delayed in potty training since I am constantly told I’m not pushing him hard enough or he is delayed in his training.

No worries at all, I definitely felt the pressure (mostly from family) saying how every baby they know potty trained at one and my daughter was lagging behind 🙄 I think there is so much pressure and it was a mum I met in a supermarket who told me her son was 3.5 when he learnt and there is no medal for going early, they are ready when ready ❤️ Everyone’s in such a hurry to get kids trained and learning so early and fast it makes life so hard to enjoy, when I started to relax and watch for cues instead of timing my daughters I relaxed aswell as my little ones :) other people’s opinions can just be opinions, don’t worry about following them your not “pushing hard enough” that sentence alone is bad advice for anything anyway! Xxx your doing fab ❤️

Hey, I have a 2 year old that is potty trained. We started with taking him every 30 minutes to the potty using a timer. That is a better interval even though he/she may or not pee. We kept him drinking water and for the most part he would go every 30 minutes. You will have to be consistent for at least 3 days for them to get the gist ☺️ Also it’s time to get rid of diapers or pull ups if you haven’t already. Introduce them to the feeling of getting wet if they have an oopsie and just let them know they can’t pee or poop in pants. We just were very animated with our little one saying “eewww” and “dirty” and that’s been something he has carried on 😂 Also I suggest buying pads I bought these reusable pads that can be washed. I was so worried about furniture getting dirty and this had made things so much easier for things like peeing in their sleep or lounging on the couch. They will still have moments they miss the potty but for the most part they will learn very fast

When book I read encouraged prompting the toddlers to use the potty (it not really an option you’re telling the need to go) but not at set times but before and after sitting for long periods, meals, arriving somewhere or sleeping. Yes, they’ll tell you they have to go but if they’re having fun or are distracted they’ll keep holding it in until it turns into an accident. This tip has really helped me especially when we are out. Consistency is key. And it also suggested not telling them “it’s ok. It’s just an accident.” Instead just gently remind them “pee pee (or poo poo) goes in the potty”. It’s been a few months and my daughter is pretty good now at knowing when she goes. However, every now and then I still have to prompt her to use the potty. It’s just to be expected until they are a little older.

My toddler reverted back into diapers when she saw the baby in diapers getting changed and helping out. We decided to wait and try again once she felt more comfortable and confident being the older sibling. It was too much stress to on everyone (new rolls, being consistent) to force something she wasn’t ready for.

@Mona Do you use training underwear or diapers?

She only wears a pull up when she sleeps. The first few days she was completely bottomless. Then, she was commando for a little over a month. Now, she wears underwear but still sleeps with a pull up. I followed the Oh Crap, Potty training book’s method.
