Advice

baby is 3 weeks old and born at 6lb 4 at 37 weeks, so is quite small. hes currently on kendamil formula, pooing fine, getting his wind up fine but often looks like hes in pain and straining and gets really red faced and upset. we’ve been trying infacol and i do think its made some improvement to his bowel movements and wind but he still seems in pain at times. i haven’t tried gripe water yet at it says from a month old but does anyone have any suggestions?? do i change his formula??

It could be worth trying a different formula. They won’t prescribe something to help at this age as he is still very young. People may disagree but a couple sips of cooled boiled water (literally 2 or 3 sips) can help soften stools x

Could be infant dyscezia, I think it's called x

We are having similar problems here. A bit more severe tho. You could try biogaia probiotic drops. You can use it alongside infacol as well.

It’s quite normal as long as poops are daily or every other day type of thing. They don’t know how to relax pelvic floor muscles to poop or pass wind - they get that skill closer to 4 months I believe. So I’d stop giving him anything besides formula if he’s going to washroom fine like you’re saying. They will strain and grunt heavily as they try to do it for now

Try changing the way you burp him x

My baby had similar issue with the straining thing, the bicycle exercise on the legs mild tummy rubbing (clockwise) helped. Infacol dint do much though. she’s exactly 4weeks today, less strains now and i started giving her the grip water today. Ur baby will be fine too

Be careful with infacol, my little girl had some reflux problems and i was told that infacol has some sort of acid in it which can make the reflux worse, she’s also on Kendamil, now she’s 7 weeks it seems to have sorted itself out, we do also give her the kendamil pro biotics which seem to have helped too xx

I could have written this myself. My little one was on Kendamil and only went for a poo every other day resulting in a dark green explosion and lots of straining building up to going to the toilet. We also did infacol and like you said things slightly improved the tummy aches she was experiencing. At 5 weeks we did end up getting diagnosed with a cows milk allergy by GP. Just to add her skin was a bit on the red and blotchy side, so we did have other systems too. If it hadn’t ended up being a cows milk allergy I think the comfort version is supposed to be a good option to try x

My son is 4 weeks old also born 6.4 but at 36 weeks. Same we are using Kendamil ready to feed atm and he does the same straining thing where he’s red faced and looks like he’s in pain. Remember new babies don’t know how to use their muscles yet ect so they’re just getting used to there body. I think it’s dyschezia. We are using infacol at every feed and we have upped it to 2 syringes now before each feed. Didn’t help with the burping but has made him fart a lot x

Try taking him to see an osteopath, normally colic etc stems from birth trauma x

A small amount of 0.1m of gripe water works fine was okay with my girl who was born at 38 weeks weighing 6.1 x
