DnD?

I feel like this is a long shot, but I thought I'd ask, just on the off-chance... Any Dungeons & Dragons players among us geek mums? I've never played but it's something I've wanted to try for a long time. After having my LG it's too tricky to join an in-person group, so I joined an online discord group instead. But. Oh my word... I feel so out of my depth 😅 not to mention it's very male dominated and lots of people much younger than me. Not only is D&D a whole new language to me but they use quite a complex bot to play. I just don't feel like I can ask questions or feel welcome. So, my question. Anyone else play (and that would like to chat DnD with me- an absolute noob?!)

Hi Sophie 😁 I also play DnD. I did before becoming a mum and still do now. Online is great for us mom that haven’t got exactly enough time on our hands. But in person is nice to have a bit of a break and meet new people. Not all group are good, took me some time to find mine but when you are in and you connect with the right peoples it is a joy to play and create stories together.

Hey Sophie. I'm a d&d player and happy to chat about. I absolutely love it

Not a player, but I am very curious about it myself. I'm a solo working parent, so difficult for me to join a group & I always worry about annoying others with being a complete newbie to it

I've played in the past, although I tend to play other systems than D&D. I tend to prefer to DM than play. If you are interested in role play gaming and not necessarily tied to D&D then you might find different demographics in different systems. Brindlewood Bay is an interesting one - more narrative based and less fight-y and all the characters are older women. It's cosy mystery with a bit of horror rather than fantasy though.

@Marion hi! How did you find groups to play online and/or in person? I imagine in person is so much better to have that connection!

@Hayley thanks! Can I message you? :)

@Kayler exactly this. I had so many questions and when I thanked someone for helping me they got all funny because they assumed I was being sarcastic :(

@Faith Brindlewood Bay sounds perfect! How would I get started playing?

I play with a group online! I have done for 4 years. It’s been wonderful

@Sophie I use to go to a geek retreat that was in my city. This is where I first started playing and from there I joined a campaign 😁. For online it took me some time to do the jump but found a group on Facebook that post games here and there all based in the uk. One day saw a good synopsis so I ask if I could join. Since I have been playing with this group every Monday for nearly a year now. Here is the link 🔗 https://www.facebook.com/share/g/FHV1agLng1wrdp5Q/?mibextid=K35XfP

I play! I'm only play online games as the friends I play with are all in different countries and none of my local friends play dnd haha. I haven't looked at the new 2024 rules but I'm starting a new campaign and the dm might be using those so I'll be learning those soon. Happy to chat about it anytime! I'm a sucker for a barbarian btw, if you want a nice "easy" class to play! Very fun to play too.

Hello! Sorry, this is long! I'm a 10-year Dungeon Master currently on a break from D&D to play/GM my one true love Call of Cthulhu. First thing first DON'T RUSH! Watch some videos on YouTube, and see if it's really for you; there are so many RPGs; what films do you like? Books do you read etc. If so find an online group. For the discord that you are on, can you make an advert? Looking for a group? Or looking to learn in groups? I know you want to play online, but a f2f group honestly is the best way to start; look for a group local to you, get a babysitter and have time for yourself. D&D can become a large hobby, time, etc, and you need to make sure RPGs are for you. I know a lot of people love the game lore, character creation, drawing their characters, critical role shows & animated shows but don't like the Roleplaying element which is basic foundation of the game, it's also hugely cooperative and if you don't gel well with a group you won't enjoy the game. Good luck, message me if needed

@Faith you play Brindlewood Bay 😍😍😍😍

@Marion thank you for the link!

@Harriet I had someone else recommend CoC! How is it different to DnD? Watching YouTube videos is what made me finally decide to play. I love rp - I do a lot of free form rp with online friends and writing too- both fantasy/horror genre mostly. I enjoy the story element- everything from character, lore/background and story progression itself. So that more than the fighting/levelling up side of things.

@Sophie absolutely 😁

@Sophie D&D is a fantasy game in a fantasy setting think Lord of the Rings. Where the majority of people play the heroes and defeat the bad guys at the end. 🤗 The rules are lengthy and have recently been updated. A lot of people power play, and games can go on for years, it's the biggest RPG in the world another reason to find a group of people you get on with. Then there is Cthulhu. You are playing against the Unknown. You play normal people. Mystery, investigation, psychological horror, survival, and the inevitability of human frailty in the face of cosmic terror 😀 (you can go crazy) Also, the rules are so easy, and there are so many 'flavours' of Cthulhu. Example Regency Cthulhu is fighting the Unknown as Elizabeth Bennett from Pride & Prejudice 😉 It depends on you and what you enjoy 😉

@Marion thank you for sharing my Facebook group @Sophie I have just approved you :)

I’ve been playing DnD online for almost 2 years now. No idea what I’m doing most sessions but it’s fun

@Harriet oh wow. 😁 your group is amazing. Managed to find the best game and made great friends in the process. Thank you for creating it.

@Harriet my husband got it for me when they did the kick starter. We started one game with me GMing but we had to stop because we were having so much trouble finding the time to play (amazingly it wasn't us being the most flakey).

@Sophie They have a very active discord channel (https://t.co/WF84ZJwGx9) which might be a good first place to find games looking for players/other players looking to create a group. https://startplaying.games/search?q=Brindlewood+bay has some games if you want to pay for sessions. (Never used them so have no idea about quality). Not quite the same but if you want to get an idea about the system there is a BB real play podcast at https://actualstorypodcasting.com/ which is a fun listen.

@Sophie with D&D you don't have to worry about you characters losing their grip on reality. CoC is more about how your characters lose their grip on reality... 🙃

Thanks everyone for your replies by the way... I honestly didn't expect anyone to respond!! It's so lovely to hear your positive stories and advice- it's given me hope and I won't give up on it just yet!

👋 Hey! Lightfoot Halfling Bard Veneficus here, at your service! I play with an in-person group, but it’s wound down recently. I’m no expert, but here if you wanna chat fantasy/rpg/nerdy shiz, or ask any questions. Hope you find what works for you and have some fun on the way! 🧙‍♀️✨

@Faith, my friend ran it for me and a group. He didn't finish, though, as one player wasn't participating, and it felt too much like hard work. Looking to get the books myself for Xmas

I play! In person once a week, been playing my Druid for a year and a half now? and every other week I play animal adventures (basically d&d but cats and dogs) 😄

Yesssssss message me I love d&d but only ever played 1 game years ago and it wasn't good as we had a bad DM but I'm down to talk D&D with u x

Me and my partner play DnD both online and face to face. We are in our early-mid 30s. I don't personally love playing online, I hate roll20 and the magic only really comes alive for me doing it tabletop style... Happy to chat DnD with you tho definitely 🥰🥰

Update: I played D&D for the first time yesterday and bloody loved it!!! Found a group on fb looking for new players and we had our first online session. There was another brand new player like me and a couple of guys with slightly more experience, but I felt so welcome and it was much easier than I'd imagined to get started!

I love d&d but haven't been able to join a group but I prefer to play in person

I myself have been wanting to learn D&D for so many years but have never found anyone else wanting to play or willing to have a newbie join, I find discord very confusing on how to use and how to join in. If anyone has advice for where I can find a group to help me learn would be very much appreciated xx

@Berni defo join the Facebook group, that's where I found my game! 🔗 https://www.facebook.com/share/g/FHV1agLng1wrdp5Q/?mibextid=K35XfP

Thank you @Sophie but unfortunately I don't have a Facebook x
