@Sadé he's 3
I have 3 yr old twins, both on the spectrum. My youngest twin uses a communication device. He started out with Proloquo, which is an iPad app. His ABA therapists use that with him. Now that he has started the three year old preschool, they have started using TouchChat in school. Sometimes, the screaming and the meltdowns are due to their frustration with being able to communicate. Three year olds have big feelings, and not having the words or any method of vonveying them can be very frustrating. I would suggest looking into some form of communication device and, in the meantime, work on some sign language with him so he can at least request the things he needs.
@Sadé I thought about a communication device. He knows some sign language and we had to fight tooth and nail to get him just to use the sign for more. The smallest things set him off and he used to scream when we were teaching him sign language. Did your kids have a hard time learning to use them?
He has been using it since he was about 2.5 years old, and he picked it up really quickly. The school didn't like Proloquo bc they said it was more for demands, and they wanted functional communication like good morning and thank you. He seems to be doing well with the switch.
@Tristyn Cromwell communication devices are very versatile and you can start no tech up to high tech. You just have to be consistent with showing him how to use it and start small. 2-4 images/buttons introduced at a time
AAC communication whether it’s thru printed boards or on a tablet & sign language can be super helpful!
