Midwife for Csection

Hey ladies, my family doctor told me not to go for midwife if im planning to go for csection. Basically i had an emergency csection first time and she said its safe to go for repeat csec considering my age(38) until Im hell bent of trying Vbac this time. I’m not sure if I should think of Vbac ladies 😢 what if they make me go through the entire process of labour, epidural and then finally ends up being another csec. What is your suggestion, are midwives not recommended for csection?

My situation is a bit different than yours... I started off with a midwife and then had a "planned" section (my daughter was 2 weeks earlier than the scheduled date) and my midwife was there during the section as support. I was informed that if I were to have another babe some day, they would still accept me as a patient even if I did have another planned section. Not sure if that helps!

I had a c-section with my last. I am also having a planned c-section in a few months with my current pregnancy. Both my previous and my current pregnancies are with midwives. Obviously there is some involvement with an OB. I'd still choose the midwife for prenatal care.

I used midwives for both my boys and I have two csections. They are present regardless of how the baby is born and the after care is the best. I would choose a midwife every time.

Thanks @Tara. Did your midwife check on you after your delivery too?

@Jessica thanks for your response. If its my first time going for midwives how did you select? When I register through the website there are list of midwife teams.. and i dont know which one should if go for. honestly its so overwhelming!

You get assigned a team based on when you are due. You meet all the members of your team throughout your visits leading up to the delivery. If you choose a csection they refer you to an OB at your preferred hospital and then you meet with both the OB and midwife separately leading up to the csection date. The midwife is in the operating room with you and is there to support you. As soon as the baby is born the midwife takes them and looks after them. It's honestly the best of both worlds.

Thanks for your response. This was really helpful

I also had an emergency c section the first time (had a midwife). This time (currently pregnant) I am still going with a midwife but I am deciding if I want a vbac or planned csection. My midwife gave me a bunch of science-based data stuff to read and listen to but also suggested I have a consultation with a ob before deciding if I want to try for a vbac or do a planned csection. There's a lot of pros and cons for either but it's ultimately your choice. As Theresa said, even if you go with planned csection your midwife will be there for you. Unfortunately, there's always a chance someone who tries for a vbac but may still need an emergency csection

Yes (in Ontario at least) the midwife checks in on you and baby for 6 weeks following the birth, after which you and baby are no longer in their care. This is a post-surgery check, a few general health/weigh-ins for baby, and followups to ensure your mental health and resources are going well postpartum. The best part is the midwife comes to you, so you don't have to worry about dragging your freshly-cut self and newborn out to a medical office for several visits. Home visits are such a big plus when you're in that state.

@Tara thanks again this was super helpful

@Bonnie thanks gurl 😊
