Maternity pay question

My sister in law told me that when she was on maternity leave and after going down to SMP/the unpaid portion, she received a few tax rebates. I wonder if this has been the case for anyone else and how I might go about calculating what they will be? Just trying to do some budget planning (due April 18, will get 19 weeks full pay followed by SMP then 3 months unpaid).

It would depend when your maternity would start as if you started it after the 6th April you would be unlikely to receive any tax rebate for the 2023/24 year. you should get something back from your 19 weeks as this is likely to be taxed as it was what you were earning for the full year and SMP amount isn't high enough to be taxed x

you might be able to ask your payroll department to do you pay slips for the full year? x

Ah ok - my mat leave starts 18th April. I meant for the 2024/25 year, sorry.

You could always do the payslips and then add up the 12 months of gross salary and use HMRC income tax calculator and see what tax you should have paid x

Great tip - I'll give it a go, thank you! X
