Dottie or Dorothy on birth certificate?

I want to name her after my grandma and me and my partner can’t agree on baby’s full name whether it should be just Dottie or Dorothy but known by everyone as Dottie. What do people think? I don’t dislike the name Dorothy I just feel it’s abit pointless if no one will refer to her as it. Also my grandma was known as Dot and Dottie.

I'd personally use Dorothy then go by Dotty or Dot. My husbands nan goes by Lucy but her name is lucinda and has always been Lucy.

Personally I would put Dorothy. I hate nicknames as first names though. 🙃 I think it’s cuter having Dottie as a nickname, which can be changed with age.

It's ultimately personal preference isn't it but sometimes I think having Dorothy as their name means they have more options as they grow up. They might be dot or dottie or dodie or any other nickname but decide later on to go by Dorothy. But like others have said that's my personal preference with names - give them the fuller name even if you plan to use nicknames when younger, as I think it future proofs it a bit more. If you don't like Dorothy at all then you might decide its best not to use it!

My boy is Thomas but has always gone by Tommy. Lots of friends etc don’t even know that his name on his birth certificate is Thomas! We were in the same position and unsure whether to use Tommy or Thomas but glad we went for Thomas as it gives him a choice when he’s older. Dottie and Dorothy are both lovely x

I would put dottie on the birth certificate. I agree with yourself it’s pointless putting Dorothy when you can put her name down as dottie if that’s what you’d prefer. I personally prefer dottie.

Dorothy x

Thanks everyone! It’s good to get views from different people. I find I’m getting mixed messages from family about dottie being a nickname but Dorothy sounding like a 90 year old 🫠 I’m also already sick of people asking if that’s what she’ll be called and even if she is it feels weird calling her that before she’s born… or is that just me?
