Potty Training

I could do with some advice please. Sorry for the long post. We tried potty training in July just before Romans birthday and he did well for 1 day and then just went through an outfit every hour for a couple of days after that so we stopped as he kept crying saying he didn't want to use the potty and to be honest it was stressful for everyone as he was at nursery too. We have two different potties and a seat for the toilet but even now he's still adamant he doesn't want to use the potty or toilet however if I take his nappy off in the morning before his morning wee, he will say I need a wee and use the potty or he will sometimes go before his bath. He has also pooed on the potty a few times. He actually did a poo on the potty before he ever did a wee. I then thought I would leave it until next year as everyone has said as long as he's doing it before he goes to school that's all that matters. Here is my problem, my mum has just told me he has done a few wees on the potty at her house but then had a few accidents including pooping in his pants which he has found hilarious. She has said that it's my fault that he isn't potty trained as he has gotten used to using his nappy and that he should have been potty trained a year ago. She has also said that he's lazy (which i do agree with to some extent) and that I should just take his nappies away and eventually he will stop wetting himself. I know I need to potty train him but is it naive of me to think he would do it in his own time? Or should I just stop putting him nappies in the daytime and have an upset child for a few days? How do people deal with car journeys when potty training as I do not have time to clean the car seat every day. I tend to over think everything so apologies!

Children potty train at all different ages so don’t listen to your mums comment of he should’ve been trained a year ago. My son was 3 in May and we potty trained him in the summer holidays. What worked for us was getting him excited about doing it, I took him shopping and he could pick his own pants, we made a sticker chart and he chose the stickers he would have as a reward each time he used the toilet. I’d personally stick with either one potty or the toilet, it could be a bit off putting/confusing for him having so many different options. My son was adamant he didn’t want to use the potty so we got a portable foldable toilet seat and he took to that straight away Accidents in the first few days are to be expected but don’t punish or get cross with him for it (as frustrating as it is when you’re constantly changing clothes)

@N 💞 Thank you so much! That's helped. We did the whole shopping for pants and bought a sticker chart in July however I have bought him a toy for when he's finished potty training so hopefully that will be an incentive for him. Regarding accidents, how many should I expect because at one point he was doing every single wee and poo in his pants so I'm finding it hard to gauge. He's currently in pants and he was happy with that so fingers crossed he stops playing when he realises he needs a wee as I think that's part of the problem. He doesn't want to stop playing to go to the toilet 😒 x

Ah lovely it's blooming hard!! Your mum should be bit more supportive, it isn't your fault at all. So oliver is fully trained just wearing boxers and now boxers and shorts over the top. Then starting doing OK with trousers. This is all in the house though. Yesterday I decided to let him go out without a pull up on. (Just to our friends across the street) He was doing great going for wees but then my husband rang to say he had pooed before got to toilet so had to shower him. We tried though. Nursery said he's doing great. It's just the leaving the house without a pull up and going in car, we are going away again next weekend. I know he can do it :( he is just slightly lazy xx

@Ruth Yeah, she's a great grandma but there's always something I've done wrong as a parent. I think with Roman he doesn't want to stop playing to go to the toilet and then leaves it too late. X

@Kirsty try and go back to the sticker chart and see if he’s excited for it, or any other incentive that you think might work. Have you tried having him naked from the waist down? I’ve heard that works for some. In regards to how many accidents I don’t really know what’s normal, but I’d imagine a lot! we were very lucky in the sense that our son took to it very quickly (which I was absolutely not expecting!) so by day 3 he was having no accidents, day 1 he had 3 accidents and day 2 he had 2. With going out in the car you could put a nappy on over the pants so he can still feel the sensation of being wet but it doesn’t get through to the car seat, or we used those puppy training pads in the car seat, thankfully he never had an accident in the car but I did have to pull over pretty sharpish a few times for him to have a bush wee in the first few weeks!

@Kirsty we bought a massive pack of puppy pads from Amazon and just put one on the car seat worked really well x

It’s hard work! My girl was a May 2021 baby and she won’t potty train at all, it’s like she’s got a phobia!! Hoping one day that she will just start using the toilet x

My boy went through a few days he was all about it now he won’t do it and still is in nappy’s despite hating nappy changes and us saying you won’t need your bum changing if you poo on the toilet ! 🙄

@Kirsty my little one is in the nursery at the school I work in and was having one sometimes two accidents a day because she didn’t want to stop playing. I’ve bought a colourful timer from Amazon and it’s been a game changer. There’s been no accidents and she even goes before it goes off now. It might help your little one? I also second puppy pass in the car seat x
