I’m hypoglycemic so I’m always checking my sugars. I’ve done the glucose test with my first 3. This pregnancy I’m not doing any type of testing, but again, I’m always checking my sugars so I would know if there’s a problem
Yes!! I did the fresh test and I’m sorry that’s not an option for you. Because that was so great and easy. And tasted way better. I’m using midwives instead of doctors since we’re having a Homebirth. And the finger pricking is so easy and gives really clear results too.
@Mackenzie I would love to not test but this is my first pregnancy so I never had to do any of the testing so I’m not sure where I’m at lol. I’m in my third trimester and the nausea is definitely coming back and I’m not sure doing the glucose test would even be worth it as I feel I would just throw it right back up so I decided I wanted to do the finger prick even if my doctor told me no other alternatives just not sure what my numbers should be at after every meal and if I would need to fast between every meal!!
@maile usually for the finger prick you only do it twice a day and it’s usually after you eat a lot carb/ high protein meal. At least with my midwives office not sure other places. And actual vomiting in the third trimester isn’t great. Nausea is normal but vomit isn’t. Maybe see if you’re having iron issues or something
@Delainey I really wanted to do the fresh test since I’ve heard lots of great things about it!! my nausea is coming back and I don’t think the glucose test they offer would even be worth it since I feel as I would throw it right back up!! Good for you!!! It is great to feel comfortable while giving birth I would love to do a home birthing!! do you know how I would go about the finger pricking? would I have to fast after every meal? I know you prick as soon as you wake up but then after you have breakfast and lunch etc. I’m a snacker lol and I was just wondering if I had to fast after every meal. also are the numbers different for every brand of blood sugar testing device?
@maile for me personally I like to see my numbers between 80-100 but I know an average good blood sugar level is anywhere between 80-130. Do not test immediately after eating as that’s not very accurate. You need time for your body to work through the food and regulate itself. I usually wait 20-30 minutes after a meal to test (if I remember because I have 3 kids running around lol). I’m also having a homebirth like @Delainey so no doctor to worry about pissing off this pregnancy lol but there are other options besides the glucose test whether your doctor likes it or not.
@maile I do not believe there was fasting involved. Since we did multiple pricks over a week. The fresh test was also not affected by my nausea ( tasted like a low sugar lemonade) and I did not have to fully fast, but I could only eat strictly protein that day. So I had eggs and sausage. And then i took a protein bar to eat right after they drew blood. I passed! I’m also very plus size, and haven’t done super great on no sugar or carbs through my whole pregnancy so i fully expected to have GD as those factors affect it. But I didn’t!
I try to eat about 100 grams of protein a day.
@Delainey what kind of diet do you recommend while doing the finger pricking? I haven’t really been watching what I eat😳 besides me snacking I usually just have apples or green grapes!! I also haven’t thrown up just been nauseous after eating sometimes and when I first wake up
@Mackenzie thank you so much!! very helpful❤️ I know I would love to just feel comfortable and not deal with the doctors lol. I wish she would have offered them to me but now I understand I need to be firm and demanding!!
@maile I try to loosely follow the brewers method diet. But mostly I just focus on protein intake. And low carbs and low sugar. Also i avoid soy protein. And then I do fill in with fruits occasionally. But fruits are sugar in your body, so is bread or pasta. If you’re vomiting in your third trimester though that would def be indicative of low iron or something. Low iron in pregnancy can leave you more susceptible to hemorrhage after birth too. So eating spinach and red meat is really good for that and may help with nausea.
My OB allows the finger prick instead. Thankfully she also allowed me to order the fresh test for my screening so I hopefully won’t have to do finger pricks. I can’t do Glucola because of the food dye. I’ve thrown up orange and red food due since I was a kid, especially orange. I didn’t feel like wasting anyone’s time and my hunt for standard size dye free jelly beans was fruitless. Jelly beans were my other alternative offered. They can’t force you to do anything you don’t want to. Frankly if the OB is that obstinate about giving you options then I’d look for a new one. Remember you are the consumer, they are providing you a service. You have every right to determine how you want that service to be administered.
@Eliza 100%. There are several options. And she’s right if they’re not willing to work with you on this they also likely won’t work with you on your birth plan if it deviates from what’s “ normal” and “ expected”
@Eliza I 100% agree with this. You shouldn’t have to fight with your doctor about any kind of alternatives if you and baby are still going to be safe. I fought with my nurses during my 2nd birth because they didn’t want to let me out of the bed and simply move around. Find someone who is going to listen to you and not make you feel stupid

@Eliza I would love to do anything other than the glucose drink, I just personally don’t want to waste anyone’s time either I can’t do sugar that good already and I think the test would be a waste. I asked if I could do the fresh test and she said no, I ask for any alternatives and was turned down from all of them because “they don’t offer them” then she brought up how on TikTok people say that their are other alternatives but there isn’t knowing she was wrong I ignored her, I just bought the finger prick sink I was so use to having my iron checked and blood drawn it doesn’t hurt or bother me, I’m going to call and inform her on what I’m doing and telling her I’m not taking no for a answer on this. it’s something I feel comfortable with, I will be getting a notebook to track all of my stuff in it so I can show her but if that’s not enough I will be looking for a new doctor!! thank you so much 💕
@maile don’t be shocked if they dismiss you as a patient. This often happens when they feel like you may become a liability to their practice. I’ve seen it happen before. That being said, you should always be able to advocate for yourself.
can’t you just go the fresh test anyway IF they’re instructing you to take it at home and hour prior to appointment? that’s what i did, they gave me the typical one to do at home and i did my fresh test. i asked for permission the first pregnancy but this second one i didn’t bother asking
@maile honestly your OB sounds very inflexible and if your desire for a home birth from the other comments is any indication, then I’m guessing you want to labor as naturally as possible. If it were me I wouldn’t trust someone that’s so set in their own ways. Clearly this doctor doesn’t keep up with current standards and research which is another red flag.
@Andrea they wouldn’t let me do it at home, I live about 6 minutes from my OB and they denied me going home which I can understand I guess but they told me they wouldn’t let me take the fresh test
I really feel like people stress out about the taste of the drink too much 😅 it literally just tastes like a flat pop.
@🪷Faith🪷 I never said anything about the taste. I wouldn’t mind the taste at all, it’s the effect it has everyone can do their own thing all I was asking for was advice and I got that🫶🏽
Honestly i think they just dont want to deal with managing you/monitoring you while you send in glucose readings. It's easier and quicker to make u do the drink and then the 3 hr test. And I say this as someone who's on their second time with GD. Soo many women have to do the 3 hour test only to find out they don't have it.
Also... my doctor had me drink the glucose drink at home and then go to the lab and hr later for blood draw. How would they know if u drank the fresh test vs what they gave u ? Of course I haven't done the research on the fresh test so not sure what's the difference tbh
@Theodora they won’t let me take the drink at home
@maile ah ok i see. Hopefully u can find a doctor willing to let u do it
@Theodora they let me I just had to tell them I declined on the drink since I couldn’t do the fresh test or anything else I’m doing the finger prick!!
Your doctor can’t tell you “no”, lmaoo.. so let’s press for what you want mama ❤️
@Amanda they can refuse to continue being your doctor.
It’s not at bad as people make it
