Not producing breast milk quick enough

My plan was to solely breastfeed my baby but he was born on the bigger side (8lb 8oz) and every time I breastfeed he still wants more. Because of this, the hospital has given me formula milk to top him up, so I breastfeed first then formula milk. Has anyone else had to do this.

From my experience, some midwives are too quick to offer formula. I would contact a lactation consultant ASAP It is rarely a matter of production and provably lack of knowledge, latching, or cluster feeding

How old is your baby ? They do say that milk can take a few days to come in properly . Also as other comment said you should go get support from a professional , your health visitor can usually help with that by referring you to the correct people :)

It's possible he's cluster feeding too to up your supply. But like the above said, could be worth seeing a lactation consultant or if there are any breastfeeding peer support groups near to you I'd recommend going..

Yep. My baby was 3 weeks early (25 Oct) and tiny at 5 lb 11. Even now he’s still only 5 lb 11 and he’s 12 days old today He’s soooo hungry I cannot get him what he needs from boob. We do formula top ups all night. With dedication to pumping my supply is increasing so we’re starting to not need fórumla during the day finally. But yeh it’s weird and he can be attached to the boob for hours on end , so tiring 😑

Thank you everyone. I'll definitely give these ago. He's 4 days old by the way. He could be on the breast for a while and still be hungry

How old is your baby? Newborns are just like this - they will cluster feed and it will encourage you to produce more milk. You shouldn't give formula so quickly. Unless it is something that you are wanting to do obviously (which it doesn't sound like?)

@Jaydee that's really normal. If you want to breasfeed, keep at it. They can feed for an hour and still want more 10 mins later. This is how they clustered so your body knows how mich milk to produce.

Sorry, just saw your last post. At 4 days old this is completely normal behaviour and your milk is still coming in! Just feed baby from the breast as often as you can when they want it (within reason. I know it is so hard and tiring)

Thank ladies. Much appreciated ❤️🩵

Coming in with another perspective, If your baby is not getting enough, you have and can use formula to top up BF sessions. However, think of it as a temporary solution while you establish your supply - you can use formula for the first week so your LO doesn’t lose more than 10% of weight. Once your supply is enough, you can EBF as planned. That’s what I did and it hasn’t had a negative impact on my baby.

My little one was 8lb 5 oz born. She fed regularly, I offered her both boob's if she looked like she wanted more. Milk came in day 4. I've had to express so i can nap but I've only just been able to express enough to satisfy her with the bottle today the previous attempts I've had to top her up which has ended my nap. She like to be awake and on one of us from like midnight on wards so we are getting a little sleep deprived after 5 days in hospital with a lack of sleep before she was born. Her being born at midnight and then us home by 10pm that night having had a little nap around 5am

Have you had a feed observed and baby checked for a tongue tie? My baby had a 100% tongue tie that we didn't find out about until the morning after he was born, that first night he was constantly on the boob, he couldn't get a good latch so wasn't actually eating very much at all. At 4 days old, it is really normal for them to want to feed a lot though, they're stimulating your milk coming in and putting in their order for tomorrow essentially

@Charley yes he's been checked tongue tie and doesn't have it. He latches on very well and would feed all day if he could.
