Pumping

I’m a nurse who does 3- 12 hour shifts in a busy emergency room. I’m going to be going back to work soon after having my baby and I’m concerned about how and when to pump. Right now I pump every 3 hours but with the unpredictable environment we work in how have others navigated this? Plus I feel bad being off the unit so much but I don’t want to lose my supply. Any insight is helpful thank you 🩷

I’m not sure if this is 100% correct however when I was pregnant my unit gave me a ‘maternity sheet’ with all my rights etc on there and from what I can recall, it mentioned I had a right to pump at work whenever I needed as long as allocated times were set etc. Check with your band 7 regarding what your trust says about this but you should be able to have extra breaks for pumping! Xx

Your trust should have a breastfeeding policy (ours only covers up to 12 months of age though) it covers your rights, access to rooms and storage etc. how old will baby be when your return? I only pump twice on work days and she just has cows milk when I’m not around she makes up for it when I get home though. You won’t lose supply at this point though as feeding is established so your milk will be there when little one needs it

As others have said, check your Trusts policy. My Trust and line manager are pretty good. I only express once per shift now, for 30min. We arranged a time that worked best for everyone, and my colleagues all know I just go away for a little bit in the morning (I still feel bad when it’s busy though!). We have a breastfeeding room for privacy as well.

I had to pump 3 times a shift when I went back, I knew rough times in that shift when it would be and just let my manager know the times. You have a right to BF and express milk x
