Autism concerns

Hi all From how ever long I can remember I have been worried over autism. If social media wasn’t a thing and it wasn’t so well broadcasted I know this wouldn’t have crossed my mind as to me it’s all normal toddler behaviour but the big wide web has got me worried sick. I can’t shake the feeling. I just wondered if I could get other peoples opinions please? My son does show ‘signs’ of autism such as 1. Obsessed with spinning things (doesn’t spin himself) but he absolutely loves to spin wheels and prams and all his toys. He’s even started spinning his ball. He does have other toys he plays with normally though. 2. Speech delay? Only saying a few words. He says ‘up’ when he wants to be picked up. Says ‘dada’ in context. ‘Car’ in context. ‘Keys’ in context. ‘Cake’ in context. He has said a few other words but only once or twice. 3. He gets to eye level to play with some toys? Again is this normal as my research said that it wasn’t but to me surely they just want to play with their toys at eye level? But things such as spinners on the door he looks at extremely close from the side to the front etc. 4. He OCCASIONALLY walks on his tip toes and can run around in circles but it only lasts a few mins. 5. He does love to roll everything and watch how it moves. I’m petrified to be honest.

Oh and he is a very fussy eater!

My baby does all 6 of these, I didn’t think it could be autism, can it? I’m worried now xx

All the things listed are completely normal! 1Nearly all kids love spinning things my little boy is obsessed. 2)He doesn’t have a speech delay at all my little boy can only say “dada” and a weird attempt at “bird” and the speech therapist we see for his swallowing knows this and said it’s perfectly normal he might not speak till he’s 2! 3) that’s just toddlers discovering things and trying to learn how things work 4) there was a post on her about walking on tip toes the other day and a lot of toddlers do it! 5) the same as the spinning thing that’s completely normal, my sons favourite toys are cars for the wheels and every single ball he can find, he proper laughs at it too. As you say a lot of things on social media make you worry but realistically you have to remember they’re only 16/17 months old they’re still learning, developing and being toddlers! This is why professionals don’t diagnose it till later on because most autistic traits are normal development things

These kids are just a worry from the minute you find out you’re pregnant! I wouldn’t be overly concerned right now though, they’re still very young and figuring things out, they do so much in these early years, it’s incredible really. 1&5: So the spinning of things, including running in circles sounds like a rotation schema. I don’t know if you’re familiar with schemas but it’s just a way in which children prefer to learn; displaying repeated patterns in play to discover the world around them etc. Interests change so he may find something else he enjoys later on. My boy is currently enjoying the trajectory schema, throws everything 😮‍💨😅 look into schemas though, it’s really interesting and can be helpful if you’re worried. 2. It’s quite normal at this age, it’s expected about 10-15 words used consistently, can be sounds they use all the time for things eg ba for ball or ca for car. Again, tip toes normal as they learn about movement and balance etc. You’re doing great mama! X

It’s common to have a burst of speech development around 18 months as well so who knows what they’ll be doing over the next few months. My son’s speech definitely has room for improvement but he’s more of a physical kid, no time to talk, must climb EVERYTHING! In a year or so we won’t be able to shut them up 😂

Also to add about the fussy eater part because I didn’t see that, so is my little boy. We started weaning at 6 months… and he just screamed at food just the sight of it he wouldn’t even touch it he’d make himself nearly throw up he’d get that bad. He took him months to finally touch it and he started eating more when he was about 14 months old. He will only eat dry foods though so anything that’s slightly soggy he won’t touch. Currently the only thing he’ll eat is homemade paw patrol waffles in the morning, cheesy pom bears, chicken nuggets, strawberry/apple oaty bars and he’ll occasionally eat a couple of other things. But we have a dietician for his CMPA and she’s not too bothered he still relys on his formula every day or else he wouldn’t gain weight he was in 9-12 clothes from 6 months-15 months because he wouldn’t eat and he barely gained weight!

As you say if social media wasn't a thing you wouldn't be worried. The "neurospicy" hype on social media annoys me so much!! Everything you have mentioned is completely 'normal' toddler behaviour. Autism is difficulties with communication and social interaction and repetitive and restrictive behaviours. Every autistic person will be unique and the 'signs' shown on social media are mostly a load of rubbish and clickbait. Even if any of our June 23 babies are autistic there's no way we'll know about it until at least next year or later as it's simply too early to distinguish from what is typical behaviours. My eldest got his diagnosis this year at 4yo after 18months on the waiting list but, even having a career focused on autism, I wasn't sure until around 2.5yrs when there was a very clear difference between him and others the same age. It's very likely my youngest will be too as it can be genetic but for now he's just a feral toddler😂

Sounds totally normal to me. And not speech delayed either tbh x

My little one does all of these minus walking on tiptoes, I'm not worried

This all sounds really normal at this point. If when you have your 2 year review with your health visitor you are still concerned they will be able to discuss it in more depth with you and keep a track of things.

My son tiptoes, is a fussy eater etc etc but that because he is only 17 months old and it’s part of how they learn things… This is all normal behavior.
