Topping up with formula

My baby is 16 weeks and has recently had blood in his poo and it’s quite mucussy. I’m wondering if potential allergy to dairy or something as he is also not putting on weight, he has dropped from 50th to 9th centiles. I want to top up with formula to see if this will help his weight increase alongside breast feeding but unsure how to go about it. Do I give one bottle of formula a day or give a few ounces after each breastfeed? Thank you!

What formula are you using and do you consume a lot of dairy….we were strictly formula pretty early on (not producing enough) and my babe had a dairy intolerance had mucousy stool and switched to soy it had her so constipated it was unreal so we did hypoallergenic and it was a COMPLETELY different baby….no longer gassy no longer screaming because she couldn’t poop I’m this sounds weird but I took a picture of her diaper with it all mucousy and showed it to her doctor and when she saw it she agreed and made the switch

@Gillian I do consume a lot of dairy yes, but baby hasn’t had any formula yet he’s been EBF x

I would def take a picture (if your comfortable with that) and show the pediatrician the poop and then to avoid issues with not tolerating formula I would just start off with a hypoallergenic formula or goats milk formula (as it’s said to be the closest to breast milk)

I would take little one to a doctor first especially with blood in his stool. It could be an allergy or it could be something else. Depending on the formula you use, it will have some level of milk proteins in it so beats the point to try and get him to gain weight if he can’t digest it properly. If you suspect it’s a dairy issue in the meantime, cut it out of your diet and see.

I'd do a top up feed when baby is cueing for it. If baby isn't asking for more i wouldn't give more.

Definitely call your doctor. When my baby lost weight, my doctor had me bf, give a bottle of formula, and then pump. It worked for us, but my baby doesn't have any allergies. So this may not be the case for ya
