Induction questions

Thinking of asking for an elective induction due to many outside circumstances that aren’t health related. My boyfriend works a job that can have him hours away at any point and i’m worried he won’t get there and need to arrange care for pets. My mother and sister keep telling me t not to as apparently it’s worse? any advice or success stories?

Hi there! I had an induction a month ago and honestly it was a success. I went in around 11:55 pm on October 16th and started cytotec within a few hours I started dilating and starting pitocin it took a total of 26 hours to get to 5cm at that point my water broke naturally and I started getting pain meds (personally had super light contractions before this point) after a few more hours the pain got bad so I got the epidural and from there it was easy sailing. I did throw up after the epidural but after that I just slept. 7-8 hours later it was time. I’m a first time mom and I pushed for less then an hour almost slept through it and only had a 2nd degree tear and im back to doing normal things just waiting to get cleared for physical activity. Hope this helps Side note from boyfriend- get epidural as soon as you can.

Pitocin contractions are WAY more painful than regular contractions. So it maybe depends on the kind of birth you want to have and the pain management options you're hoping to use. I had a successful induction at 41 weeks so even waiting can result in one 😆 but also, could be worth seeing if your boyfriend's job would let him have flexibility from when you're 37 or 38 weeks on, if you have a family friend who could be on call until the real pet sitter gets there in the same time frame, etc. I found people were willing to help and understanding that late in the pregnancy that it was all up to baby not us!

I will say everyone has a different experience when they get induced. I had an elective induction with my first, they started it the day before and my contractions started about noon the next day after they started me on the Pitocin. I got to 5cm before I was begging for an epidural, my contractions were a minute apart and I felt like I couldn’t catch a break or breath. Once they gave me the epidural I had passed out from exhaustion and woke up an hour later at 10cm. My OB broke my water and I had my son an hour later. I tore a little bit but I wasn’t worried.. yes it can be very painful but sometimes it’s beneficial to have the baby early. If I let my little man bake anymore he would have ripped me a whole lot worse🤣🤣

As long as you understand the risks involved with an induction then it’s your choice. If this is your first baby, I would say no as an non medical induction for first baby tends to be very long and chances of risks are high. Inductions are more painful, last longer and increases risks of fetal distress, not dilating and emergency cesareans. I would discuss every possibility with your OB and decide from there
