Mums to Big Babies

To mums with multiple kids! If your first baby was a big baby at birth (over 4kg or ~9lbs), was your second (or subsequent) baby similar in size? My first baby was 4.4kg (9lbs 10oz), and I’m currently pregnant with my second. I didn’t have gestational diabetes, and I’m 172cm (5’8’’) tall and weigh 60kg (132lbs). However, there’s a history of big babies on my maternal side. I’m trying to figure out if the “big baby” gene might be dominant in my family and whether I should expect similar sizes for this baby too. What was your experience in similar situation?

My first was 9lb 8oz! I didn’t have GD, i’m 5’4 and weighed around 80kg around his birth etc! My partner was 7lb 4oz and I was 5lb 3oz! I’m due my second any day now so will update on this post xx

My first (f) was 8lb 14. My second (f) was 9oz 4lb and my third (m) was 10lb 6oz. No GD for me, just a mega pipeline of an umbelical cord power feeding! So definitely got bigger for me. I’m 5ft 4inches, husband 5ft 10inches. I was 7lb 3pz at both, my husband was 9lb 14oz at birth. Interestingly, if you’re concerned about birth, as was I as all scans did show big, a retired midwife said pelvic width linked to foot size. I’m a size 7 and delivered naturally fine. So think there may be something in it!

My first, a girl, was 9lb1oz, born 4 days late. My second, a boy, was 6lb 6oz,born 2.5 weeks early, as he had stopped growing, so was safer to have him born a bit early.

@Jasmine Thank you so much for your reply, and I wish you a beautiful birth! Wishing you strength for these final days!✨

@Holly Wow, what you wrote about the connection between foot size and pelvic size is so interesting! I also have size 7 feet. I never heard this theory, despite I was reading a lot about birthing big babies during my first pregnancy. I was soo keen to have a natural unmedicated birth but my first baby was born via emergency c-section at 41 weeks after my waters broke and I labored for almost two days. Unfortunately, the amniotic sac became infected, my fever spiked, and he had to be delivered quickly. Later, we found out that the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck and body, so his size was likely just one of the factors. That’s why I’m feeling really torn about my delivery options this time.

@Nora yes you have to do what will suit you best, I can understand it’s a hard decision to make. Glad it all worked out ok. I didn’t know that about foot size til then either. Don’t think know so given as official advice how as not proven to be reliable. Best wishes anyway, I do think big babies can fire out easily enough like canon balls if you can get enough push behind them!

My 1st (boy) was 10lb 11oz and my second (girl) was 8lb 11oz! X

My first was born at 40+6 and 9lbs 6oz, my second was born at 38+4 and 8lbs 10oz so if he cooked for as long as his brother did, he’d have been even bigger 🤣 I was also a big baby a little over 9lbs and both my cousins from my dad’s side also 9lbs+
