Preeclampsia

My mum had preeclampsia in her pregnancy or the dr think so as I was born premature and wouldn’t grow. The doctor has prescribed me aspirin to take until I’m 20+ weeks as a precaution. I’m 13w. But part of me doesn’t want to take it as I think what if I don’t have it. What should I do? It’s 75mg but I don’t want it to affect my baby.

Low dose aspirin won't affect your baby but pre-eclampsia definitely can! I'd follow the doctor's advice x

I took aspirin with my first pregnancy and I never ended up getting any preeclampsia symptoms so it’s meant with my current (second) pregnancy, I’m not taking it this time. It didn’t do any bad for my first pregnancy. Because the aspirin is a low dose all it does is make your blood a bit thinner so the blood can transfer to your baby through the placenta easier. The way it was explained to me this time is they only prescribe it if you have 2 risk factors for preeclampsia. So for my first pregnancy, there was 1, my mum had had preeclampsia and 2, it was my first pregnancy but this time round, I only have one risk factor so I’m not on it this time. I wouldn’t worry too much about taking it, the risks associated with taking it are much lower than the risk associated with if you do get preeclampsia and hadn’t been taking the aspirin. I had the same concerns and that’s how it was explained to me. Hope this helps out xx

Thank you for the advice girls. I might take it as a precaution for a little while and see what happens later on as baby grows. As I was born at 26 weeks and weight 1pound 11 ounce. Due to not growing. As I don’t want baby to go through the same thing as I did.

I’d definitely recommend taking it, my baby’s turning 1 this week and she’s not had any issues or any side effects from me having taken it x

Taking aspirin doesn’t affect your baby, I took it through my whole first pregnancy. All it does is prevent you from having a potential blood clot and having serious complications. Please take the aspirin.

I took aspirin all the way through my first pregnancy and my baby was very healthy no issues at all he was 8 pounds 9 ounces (: everything the doctor advises you to have take honestly i was the same with my first pregnancy worried all the way through I’m abit more relaxed on my 2nd pregnancy (:

I was prescribed this as it's my first pregnancy which is said to be a risk factor but I think you know yourself best and should trust your own judgement. The two main early signs of pre-eclampsia are high blood pressure and proteins found in urine, I've been testing my blood pressure every few days from home and if it starts going up I'll start myself on the asprin but while it's low I'm not worried. Not sure if you have a BP machine that could help ease anxieties? (obviously this isn't a fool proof method and I have no medical background but just my perspective!) x
