Weaning

I am seeing so much conflicting advice on weaning. What age to start at, what foods to start with. And it is becoming very confusing. I have seen people say to start weaning from 4 months but others say not to start until 6 months. Is there any foods that they are not allowed until certain ages or better ones to start off with? Anyone with experience please help. I want to be ready and do right by my little one! :)

6 months is recommended due to the maturity of their digestive system. The only thing I'm aware of that they definitely can't have is honey under the age of 1. You also have to be careful introducing allergens such as nuts and they should be introduced on their own and not with other potential allergens. When you are ready to start weaning it can be purees or baby lead or a mixture. With my first I did a mixture of both methods and started off with one taste at a time for her to get used to it.

https://www.nhs.uk/start-for-life/baby/weaning/ There's loads of great advice on the start for life website! Babies should start weaning when they are able to sit up independently, have good head control and are able to bring objects to their mouth with good control. Try not to focus so much on the age of your baby but on the skills they are showing. Babies shouldn't really be weaning at 4/5 months unless there's a medical reason for it (e.g. they need to put on weight for surgery). They may also not be physically ready until after 6 months, every baby is different. Their digestive systems are definitely not ready to have any food prior to four months. Try not to focus on what others are doing for their baby, focus on your little one and do some research from reliable sources so when the time comes you are prepared! You also don't have to decide between purees/ finger foods - you can pick one or the other if you want to or you can mix between the two!

Also first steps nutrition is a great resource and is all evidence based information which all health professionals should be signposting families to

My health visitor is coming to visit me to help with weaning. I had a terrible time with my first baby. It just scares me so much about choking and I think because I was so anxious that’s why he might be a fussy 4 year old with eating xx

As the above advice really ^^ 4 months only really if on medical advice, even if showing interest in your food they need to reach other milestones in their development first. Il be starting with tasters at 6 months unless showing all the signs of being ready from 5 1/2 months onwards. For the first couple of months of weaning they still get majority of their nutrition from milk still anyway and solids are just exploration so no rush 😊
