How much?!?

Hi all. I wonder if you could give me a guesstimate of how much expressed breast milk a baby should consume per hour? My partner and I are due to go out in a few weeks to the theatre so I need to ensure my parents have enough to feed our little one while we are gone. Thank you in advance of any replies!

It’s very roughly calculated like this: between 150-200ml per KG of baby’s weight per day, so for example let’s call it’s 150ml , for a baby that weighs 4kg is 600ml per day, if you feed roughly 8 times a day, then that would be 75ml per feed. I would leave extra though, just in case!

@Sofia thank you that’s fab. I am going to try with some expressed milk to give my body a break between feeds so this is super helpful - my health visitor hasn’t been very helpful at answering questions!!

Before 2 months of age it's roughly up to 120ml per feed, but each baby is unique and depends on how often the baby feeds 😊 I will instruct my mum to give 100ml when I go to a hairdresser next week and baby will be 5 weeks old.

Breast milk adapts to baby's needs so the volumes don't need adjusting like formula does. I've always followed 1 - 1.5oz for every hour away, and no more than 4oz per feed and make sure bottles are pace fed to mimic the flow of breastfeeding. So if you were gone 3 hours baby would need between 3 - 4.5zo breastmilk, but only 4oz of that in one go at the most especially at this age as you don't want to stretch their stomach x
