Unpaid leave for NCT antenatal class

I’m a teacher and wanted to attend my final NCT session. It happened to fall on a school day and I therefore needed the day off. It was recorded as unpaid leave so it will be deducted from my wages. Would antenatal classes be considered a routine antenatal appointment (which is paid) or would you say that it should be unpaid? I didn’t have a choice to take the class on a weekend otherwise I would have. The policy states, “All pregnant employees, regardless of length of service, are entitled to paid time off to attend antenatal appointments. Antenatal care may include relaxation and parent craft classes (on the advice of a healthcare professional), as well as medical examinations related to the pregnancy. Such time off will be paid at your normal rate of pay.” Just looking for thoughts or experiences.

As an NCT class is optional, I would have thought unpaid also. Unless you have something in writing from your midwife telling you to attend the classes. X

I work in HR and this would be class as unpaid leave as it is paid for class and is optional. X

I haven’t done any personally but midwife said I could do antenatal classes and they should be paid same as any antenatal appointment. I would call ACAS for advice to make sure or your union if you have one but I’m sure it’s meant to be paid as your post itself says.

My work told me it's unpaid also x

my NHS classes were paid and counted as appointments but if i had paid for one through like NCT i’d have had to have taken it as unpaid time. i think my HR consider the NHS ones as non optional but others would be since i would have been booking and paying for them

Read the school policy and ask your union.
