Should I ring 111?

So my little one has woke up this morning very upset, he’s been constipated recently and his appetite hasn’t been great, however he’s managed to do a poo, when I changed him he started having another one but it was very loose. He seems a bit lethargic, isn’t smiling at me, just glancing. He’s now having his milk but am unsure what to do? Ave never been in this situation.

I offered him 8oz of milk and he’s drank 6oz.

It depends and is up to you really! He might be unwell, but this could be managed at home depending on what’s up with him but if you feel he needs to be seen by a doctor then you’re entitled to do so! For constipation and lethargy, I wouldn’t for my daughter - I’d just keep an eye on her at home to begin with and go from there but it’s entirely up to you. You know your son best, if he’s himself or not and if he’s unwell. Sorry I realise that isn’t much help!

@Bec aw it’s okay I think he’s got diarrhoea as I can hear him having a poo, he’s crying again.

I think see how the day progresses and check his temp etc and check for dehydration xxxxxx

@Laura yeah that’s what I was thinking, I don’t think he’s got a temperature, he’s got cold hands and feet though. Xxx

@Nicola aww well that’s a good sign and I’d maybe put socks on and have a cuddle but I wouldn’t worry too much I worry when mine have really hot hands or feet 🤣 xxxx

The answer to this question should always be yes, it’s enough for you to think about calling them. What’s the worst that can happen, they’ll say it’s nothing to worry about but always worth checking it out if you’re worried. Could you book a GP appointment they have a requirement to see under 5’a within a certain number of hours

@Jess yeah I know what you mean, he’s gone back to sleep so must be feeling crappy.

I would see how the day goes with him, the face he’s having milk and his bowels are going again is a positive sign. but I know once I have 111 in my head it’s hard to get it out and there’s nothing wrong with a bit of reassurance from a professional as until they they can talk and tell you what’s wrong we are essentially guessing and going with our gut.

Sounds like something that can be managed at home - keep him hydrated, take his temp regularly and just snuggle and have a quiet day. See if he perks up tomorrow :)

Just to let you know, the waiting time is over an hour as I rang them last night and that's what they said

@Emma alright thanks, I live in the north east so it might be different here.

You could also try tummy massaging techniques with a grape seed oil for constipation

@Lindsay he’s got a bit of diarrhoea so I have just gave him toast and scrambled eggs for breakfast but he hardly ate the egg and had half a slice of toast.

Also 111 are terrible.. you’re better off just going to urgent care because all they do is tell you to do that anyway or take HOURS to call you back. I would wait it out watch for a temperature, dirty/wet nappies his eating and his milk intake x

@Elena ah right when ave rang them before I haven’t had any problems. Yeah he’s had 3 wet nappies so far so that’s good, his temp is also normal x

@Nicola I’ve rang 3 times with mine and waited over 6 hours for a call back when they told me I need to be seen by a health professional within 2 hours.. then they called back when I told them to cancel the call and I was asleep as it was 3am and they sent an ambulance to my door! I think he should be fine but keep an eye on him throughout the day x

@Elena ah right, I think they prioritise little ones, that’s crackers sending you an ambulance at that time. Hopefully he will be yeah x

@Nicola Yeahh I think it’s individual cases, I called 111 when mine was only just 1 and they sent an ambulance and asked me to stay on the phone because he was having breathing difficulties, but then they’ve done what @Elena have said and said they’ll call us back and didn’t for hours we just assumed it wasn’t a major importance then! But I wouldn’t say not to call you just never know and I’ve got the feeling that I was probably over reacting when they say to go to a health professional in two hours or something but they still have to be sure because of their age xx
