Overdraft fees are killing us

I get paid monthly as I’m disabled. November was tight but I managed to pay all our bills, get our meds, fill up the car, and get groceries. I had a lil less than $8 left in the bank. Well I forgot about a subscription that was $6.99 and told my daughter to go ahead and get the game thing she wanted for $.99. Bc of seventy-something cents, I’ve gotten $40 overdraft charges like every to every other day this month and it’s built up to $450. Idk what I’m going to do. That’s next months groceries or our power bill.

Is there any salvation army or something like that near you that could help?

Ouch mines only £80 a year and I have a 3k overdraft. You need to seek advice from a financial adviser. And get your overdraft removed straight away x

I hate that sh*t, it's so predatory, like keep taking money from people who are struggling. If you are in an area affected by natural disaster in anyway, contact them for reprieve

Look for a new bank. They are not all the same. I used to work for a bank that had a grace period for overdrafts under a certain amount.

The bank I use is the only one in town, I can’t travel far. The account I have is supposed to be for low-income people.

What about opting out of overdraft for your account? That way if the funds aren't there the transaction won't go through. Or maybe look into one of the banks that are designed to be online only since it sounds like you don't have any other options for physical banks. I don't know a lot about the online banks but I've heard of chime. Maybe see what their overdraft policies are like.

Also, this probably won't help you now but for the future. If you get an overdraft fee, call or go to the bank as soon as you can and ask to see about having the fee waived. We were allowed to waive an overdraft fee under certain circumstances, like if the account has been in good standing and you haven't had any fees waived yet that year etc.

Call the bank and ask them to waive it. Typically for something so minor they will do a one time courtesy reversal. Alternatively report that .99 cent charge your daughter made as unauthorized and get it refunded which will in turn reverse everything else. Or file unauthorized on the subscription and also email the company to ask for a refund and cancellation. Most likely they will agree to send it back and this will Also reverse the cascade of charges.

Do you have a written budget ? I keep a spreadsheet with all expenses, subscriptions and enter in groceries/gas as I pay it. It’s a lot to do, but it’s worth it not to overdraft

@Rachel my bank switched companies in October, we weren’t supposed to have overdraft but I must’ve missed them reinstating it with the change. I called the day it happened and asked since it was less than a dollar, they said that was gone and even if I pay the dollar I’m liable for any and all overdraft fees. They said I’ll have to pay the fees before I can remove overdraft—never heard of that before. I most definitely am going to look into other banks. Thank you for the advice!

@Lindsay yes I have a budget thank you

I would ring the bank and see if they can correct it as it a one off
