Feeding

Hi all, Just looking for some advice. I’ve got a 10 week old little boy who was born 9lbs 11 so a big baby lol! He went up through ounces quite quick and is now on 6oz bottles. He’s normally a happy baby and quite quirky, he’s on nutramigen which is a formula for babies who suffer a cows milk allergy, he’s always smiling, never really been a crier. Usually he goes 4hrs between feeds, I’ve noticed now, about 3hrs in he’s grouchy doesn’t want to be put down, cries all the time, he’s showing early signs of teething as per the health visitors monitoring, but I’m not sure it’s his teeth hurting or if he’s getting hungry sooner. Do I up his bottles to 7oz or should I just switch to feeding him every 3 hrs rather than 4hrs, but I feel then he’d be being over fed as he’s getting more bottles if that makes sense when I think he only needs an extra ounce to help him push to the 4hrs between feeds. I’m just unsure due to his age if that’s too big of a bottle, he’s a healthy weight, never lost his birth weight, and is gaining weight at the rate he should be, so no concerns of over feeding but more just his irritability. Am I just overthinking it and it’s just teething signs? Any advise would be really appreciated Sorry to ramble lol! TIA

My little boy was born at 9lbs 2oz and he was almost immediately on 4oz then worked his way up to 5oz pretty quickly. He was feeding roughly every 4 hours but this past week he’s feeding every 2.5hours, it’s killing me

@Sophie it’s so hard isn’t it cause big babies etc, but he’s just drank a bottle now, drank it so quick and is still acting hungry, and because I’m not breastfeeding due to his allergy I’m not feeding on demand, so I’m so unsure, you are a trooper tho I don’t know how you are doing it but you are and keeping going hun you are smashing it!!

@Ebony I know! I wanted to breastfeed but as soon as he came out the midwives said “you’ll have fun with him, he’s a hungry boy” and I lasted just over 2 weeks breastfeeding, then I pumped for a further week but he’s been exclusively bottle fed since then. It’s just killing me it feels like I’m not getting anything done and I get no “me time”. I wonder if there is a 10 week growth spurt or something where they are more hungry than normal

@Sophie sounds exactly like my little one, or is it cause they are big babies maybe?? Not really sure it’s so hard isn’t it sometimes to figure out if they are still hungry or just being clinging etc

Is there a certain time he’s more hungry? I was with the infant feeding team for a bit and they mentioned to me just increasing her bedtime bottle. My little one would waste certain bottles but want more come bed.

@Kerenza Bed time I only take one 6oz bottle with me and he drinks that throughout the night in short bursts, it’s more during the day so his feeds at 4ish and then again at 8ish then he’s down till he wakes in the night for that first burst, sometimes the timing change but it’s mostly during the day he’s showing more signs of agitation and hunger

With both my babies they had milk around every 3 hours then slept all night long. My son is 11 weeks and is currently having 6x 5oz bottles a day and sleeps though the night😴 I do find he sometimes wants a little bit more in between so I will make him a small bottle to just top him up. But we just feed him in response to when he's asking for milk which just so happens to be every 3 hours usually. This is what we did with my daughter (17 months) and she was a very happy baby. Honestly trying to get a routine this young isn't worth the hassle. A fed baby is a happy baby 🤍

@Ebony I think just follow his cues if you think it’s hunger then feed when he asks for it. He will soon tell you by being less grouchy or not. It’s hard as no two babies are alike but you’re doing a great job! I wouldn’t worry about how much milk at what age. The back of formulas are only a guideline. xx

My boy was 9lb 11oz too!

Does he drain the 6oz bottle every time? If so I'd up it to 7, and if not then I'd feed earlier and see what he does, if he is hungry for the next bottle 'early' then let him! Maybe he's having a growth spurt but the more he has during the day the more capacity he will have to sleep at night and we all love sleep at night 😂
